If Cortez isn't able to control Hopkins then he shouldn't be in the ring, if he's not up to the job get someone who is. Sure he tried, but he failed, and thats all there is too it.

without the holding Hopkins would've been beaten badly.

Cortez is a punk. I can't really explain why but I just get that feeling with him.

Fair but firm!! What kind of bull**** is that? Hopkins is dirtier than my dogs ass!! Joe Cortez should not referee a fight again.

1 He is totally inconsistent in his decesions making in different fights.

2 Hopkins should have got points deducted for use of the heard and cling on.

3)Smells of double standards and a biased toward the home fighter.

Somthing needs to be done about the below par ref and judges from the supposed fight capital of the wrold.

    Absolute Bull ****!!!!

I'm not a big Cortez fan, but Hopkins is very difficult to referee. He throws punches and his "natural" momentum concludes in a clinch, unlike the half-ass jab-and-grabs from the Ruiz days.

Also, Cortez reffed most (after the first few rounds) of the Mayweather/Hatton fight the way he did this one, and in fact I think that his early meddling kept Ricky on his feet a little longer.

He gave Hopkins all kinds of warnings. He doesn't like to take points unless he feels there has been something flagrant, which there was not. You should be applauding him for not buying the lowblow thing.

You need to get over Mayweather/Hatton fight. By far, by far, the better man won.

I thought Cortez did a great job. He let the fighters fight and took control when necessary in an incredibly foul-filled bout without deducting any points from the fighters. No referee would look good in this type of fight.

Exactly. The very best any ref can do in a fight like that is not be tagged as a decisive factor, and I can't imagine anyone would say he was.

I think he did pretty well tonight. He broke them up while they were in the clinch often to allow the fighting to continue and didn't dock a point on Calzaghe when Hop was pulling a Divac. Clearly Hop was using it to get a lil breather. Calzahge retaliated dirtyness with rabbit punches and a bit of head rubbing as well, and no one got a point deducted. He was fair, but firm I think.

If either fighter had actually believe Cortez was going to take any points off they would have cleaned it up. Joe got plenty of rabbit punches in there to compensate fouls against him, so imo it all evens out. However, it shouldn't get to that stage. Fighters should be worried enough about losing points to not foul so much in the first place.

Both men were fouling like crazy, as expected. Calzaghe was low blowing, hitting behind the head, and punching on the break, while Hopkins was leading with the head and excessively holding, Cortez let the fighters fight it out, I got no problem with the job he did tonite, and I hate Cortez as a ref.
