It appears I'd be in the minority, but I sincerely believed he did an admirable job.

    Me too.

I didn't read any of the rest of the thread, but it is not an easy job to ref Hopkins, period. All big blunders were avoided, which I would consider a success

He was afraid to deduct a point when need, thats the main problem as far a s I see it. Yes, both fighters were dirty as hell and it escalated because the warnings meant nothing!

There needs to be a West Coast referee like Steve Smoger.

How many of you whiners are NOT British? Looks like the football influence is rubbing off on the boxing fans.

I suggest you put in your man Graham Poll next time. Just make sure he doesn't end up counting to 20.

You people realize that some referees might have ended up deducting points from Calzaghe?

Agreed. Fouling on both sides and he pretty much let them get on with it. :thumbsup

my biggest problem with cortez (as usual with that idiot) is the way he always try to soak up as much spotlight as possible, like stopping the round to give the boys a lecture or going to the corners between rounds to declare himself firm but fair.

Poor refereeing for me. Neither fighter believed he would dock a point, so it carried on being a dirty fight.

Funny how Cortez has differing views on the rules of boxing from fight to fight, aint it?

Cortez should be resigned to the scrap heap now. He's an awful ref in my opinion. Not the worst but bad enough.

The thing is, if he would have started deducting points for Hopkins' holding then the fight would have been stopped by DQ before the sixth.......then he would have had his ass torn apart.

You are absolutely right! So why so much gloating over a win over a guy that is well past his prime? :? Only the most faithful can see this as a 'great win' for Joe.
