Cory Spinks and his longtime trainer, Kevin Cunningham, have split. Cunningham won't be working Spinks' corner at Scottrade Center for Thursday night's IBF junior middleweight title defense against Verno Phillips. Cunningham has turned his full attention to the promising Devon "The Great" Alexander (14-0), who will be on Thursday's card, defending his WBC Continental America's super lightweight championship against Miguel Callist. In the past, Spinks and Cunningham have quarreled over Spinks' training habits. Cunningham did not return a voice-mail message left for him Friday. I got this off the Stltoday website Any thoughts?
Can you post the link to this?? If Spinks gets someone like a John David Jackson or other big trainer, it could help. But Kevin Cunningham is a very good trainer and his prospect Devon Alexander is the real deal. However I'm very surprised at this split if its true..

Thanks for the link.. This part here struck me In the past, Spinks and Cunningham have quarreled over Spinks' training habits. Cunningham did not return a voice-mail message left for him Friday. I think Kevin might know something that we may not. To me when you have a style like Spinks, things like timing and conditioning are of utmost importance to maintain. He doesn't have the luxury to come into a fight in halfway decent condition and sit on his punches because he doesn't have much pop. That said, I saw him at the Jones vs. Tito fight and he didn't look like he was near 154 thats for sure. Maybe Kevin is tired and he sees he has a hot prospect who's willing to listen who's in a hot division right now.. Again I'm just speculating as there are two sides to a story and we haven't heard anything from Cory yet..
I'd like him to become re united with his (Cunninghams teacher) old trainer Kenny Adams.. Kenny is a great guy and is currently training kids in his own gym in las vegas.. Kenny is a great trainer..
I wouldn't want to be verno, watching and studying the tapes... anyway this doesn't change my mind, spinks UD
I think he will most likely stay at LMW and look for a unification with Forrest around late summer...Atleast that what I hope
Well . . . if the trainer already had problem with Spinks' training habbit before . . . this could be the reason for the split. Life goes on . . . let's see if there's gonna be any effect.
Does it even matter? Its not like Spinks is suddenly going to become and exciting main stay. The guy has one of the worst and most negative styles i have ever seen. His painful and mind numbingly boring to watch.
I think that has more to do with what kind of expectations you bring to watching boxing than it does with a fighter's style.
