That he should have been a lineal two weight champion? He was the unified champion at WW and many feel he beat Jermain Taylor. I know he's not a particularly liked fighter and there's little to no discussion regarding him on these boards... But he was robbed of a special accolade. Starts at JWW, unifies at WW and then more or less gets screwed at MW. And then immediantly afterwards REALLY gets screwed against Phillips. Thoughts on that and Spinks in general?
Yeah i thought he beat Taylor, i thought it was a bit mad how he beat Judah, so he doesnt actually have to fight him again because he proved he beat him in there, but he give him a rematch anyway, then Judah wins and never seemed like considering repaying him with a chance to regain the title. Boxing politics i guess. Never gets a mention, he was the only man i wanted to see in there with Floyd at one point, you just knew how bouts with everyone else around were gunna turn out, but Spinks was a different prospect completely stylistically.
Little over a month. Really doesn't matter how old it is, it's the fact that it got almost no responses and I still want to see what people think.
Spinks was a good fighter, Dont recall much about the first Zab fight, I do rember the stoppage in the rematch, and seem not to be in the top in the media after that. There should have been a 3rd fight. It seems most guys today are happy with the 1-1. Lewis Rahman 1-1 Zab Spinks 1-1 I suppose if Taylor wins the rematch he might be 1-1 also. MOST of the 3 fights started in the 90's.
I had Taylor winning their match fairly comfortably, actually. Landed the harder shots, actually cut the ring fairly well, and what Spinks did in the final two rounds is what is REALLY called running-Doing whatever it took, including turning his back to gain some speed, to stay away from Taylor. He stopped banking rounds when he went defensive, and gave up about 8 rounds in the fight doing so. That said, he beat Philips by 3 or 4 rounds, and you could make an arguement that he did so by 5 or 6. Bad, bad decision.
Thought Spinks beat Taylor, thought he was jobbed against Phillips and think he had some early career robberies too. The wins over Karmazin and Mayorga are underrate, both were considered no1 at 147 and 154 at the times of those fights
Slick boxer, but boring fighter. His ring entrances would get the crowd all excited and then he would put them to sleep in the fight, but thats what you get from a solid technician with little punching power and weak chin. A guy who boxes cautiously from the outside.
good fighter i like him but many people dont and i think thats what stops him getting close decisions rematches etc...
