I'm a big Cotto fan this isn't a knock on him but a compliment I'd say but does he remind anyone else of a smaller version of a prime Vargas ? Not exactly an exact copy of him but alot of similar elements
Vargas had taken alot more risks by this time in Cotto's career. He had beat the best at 154 in Wiky and had fought the best at 154 in Tito and Oscar. he seeked challenges, he tried his best to make fights happen. Vargas was passionate, he fought for his pride and for his fans. He never ran, he never cheated (except against DLH which I give him the benefit of the doubt) and he was badly managed unlike Cotto. Style wise, I can see the similarities, but I feel Vargas was more gifted.
Yes but if he gets beat by a bigger or older fighter I don't think he will be ruined in the way Vargas was. I also think he has a little more ring smarts than Vargas which makes him even better in a way. A great sense of where he is at in a fight.
For the right or wrong reasons Cotto has become the better young champ at this point compared to a pre-Tito Fernando Vargas. Blame it on the matchmaking but it's not like Vargas was ever badly hurt before Trinidad. We couldn't say the same about Cotto after the Corley and Torres fights.
COTTO IS IN THE VERGE OF BEING POUND 4 POUND FIGHTER IN THE WORLD VARGAS WAS NEVER CLOSE 2 THAT PLUS VARGAS WAS NEVER WAS AS BUSY AS COTTO IS FIGHTING EVERY 3 MONTHS NO COMPARASING
Mismanaged why? he lost to Tito and Oscar two guys who regardless of management would have resulted in the same outcome. Ring smarts plays a big part in a career and I agree with the other poster who states presence of mind during a fight and the ability to think your way through is a factor in Vargas' career. It seems thats where Cotto seems to be ahead of Vargas I think and at this point its still premature, but Cotto has that hint of true greatness that Vargas when the rubber met the road did not for whatever reasons not quite have.
I honestly don't see much resemblance. He reminds me more of a slightly bigger, more boxing oriented version of Chavez.
Vargas' was in an era where the talent was deeper Winky ODLH Trinidad RJJ Hopkins Lennox Lopez V. Klitschko Tua Toney Mosley just to name a few. Busy doesn't prove much. Quality proves more.:good
