Its not really an insult, just not a great compliment either. It would be a huge compliment for an up and comer, but Cotto is past that by a long shot.
Yeah.. Vargas imo was a very scrappy boxer who took risks in the ring, had some unorthodox head movements and footwork that worked for his aggressive style. Vargas, was not a technician, but more of a guy that would go out and will himself over his opponents with aggression and hard nosedness.. Cotto has been tailored, stylewise into a more traditional body work technician, but whats very interesting about him is that he doesn't come in one flavor.. He can box and fight defensively.. He isn't beaten if you make him move backwards, but actually quite skillful. He will move foward, work the body, and look for counters somewhat like Chavez did, but with a little different look to him. He looks for counters very well, and isn't a glutton for punishment.. He has such a style where he doesn't need to take risk or eat punches to deliver his own, which is very different from Vargas, who seemed to have the skill to avoid punishment but was good enough offensively to be competetive at trading, which is what he seemed to look for a lot.
Id say there are quick a bit alike especially watching the Vargas of the Marquez,Quartey fights. Both have solid movement, good snap to their jabs and are brutal body punchers and there favorite head punch is a lead right hand. They both have questionable chins but Cotto seems to recover better while a advantage Vargas has is I believe he has a tighter defense while Cotto is open in the center and sticks his head straight up when committing to the body agianst the ropes.
Your wrong, the Academy goes to Hopkins. I meant stunned. It was too early for anyone to look for help from the judge. One shot was bad and the other so, so. I don't think Zab was faking, the started to change after those punches. Actually, I called it before it happened. I told my friends if Cotto gets caught he is going to hit low. It happened. Holding that pain and trying to defend and be offensive is very hard. That pain stays with you for at least two rounds. I fought threw it in the amatuers.
Like many have said, I dont see any similarities within their style of fighting. I thought Vargas was an excellent boxer. He was just brought up too quickly. He had no business in the ring with Tito after barely having 20 fights. The kid had sooooo much potential. Unfortunately, fighting tito and DLH so early in his career ruined him. It's difficult to compare the 2 b/c Cotto wasnt put in the same position as a young vargas. You can probably argue that Cotto hasnt faced the level of competition as vargas did b/c Vargas fought a prime tito, dlh, winky, and quartey. Cotto, while he has fought good competition, he hasnt fought prime fighters like Vargas did. So again, it's hard to compare the two. The only similarity they shared is that they were both beyond their years in the ring as far as patience is concerned.
