WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto doesn't call out other fighters and steadfastly maintains that he doesn't choose his opponents and he'll fight whomever Top Rank puts him in with. However, his uncle/manager/trainer Evangelista Cotto told El Nuevo Dia that a May 3 superfight with Oscar De La Hoya is clearly the preferred alternative for the unbeaten champion from Cauguas, Puerto Rico. "Right now a fight with De la Hoya is more marketable than one with Mayweather," said Evangelista, "even though De la Hoya lost to Mayweather in his last fight and Mayweather won last night against Hatton, De La Hoya remains the most marketable....the other names that have been mentioned to fight with Miguel do not compare economically with a fight with De la Hoya."

This isnt the first time they've headed in another direction when a PBF bout was discussed.

i think they going to take the de la hoya fight with hopes to set up a floyd fight...

they going to take a lot of subliminal shots at floyd then an oscar fight for cotto should be a cake walk..

when everyone sees how easy cotto dropped oscar the talk floods in cotto or floyd .. then floyd wont have much choice

Hmm. Interesting. Oscar is still the most marketable and def garners big money. I don't understand why because He loses every big fight against top competition. Also, what weight would this fight take place at?

There is no way in hell fighting Delahoya would be more "marketable" than fighting the PFP number one fighter in the world. Maybe last year or early this year...But now, the number one attraction in boxing is "Money Mayweather"

Yeah, didn't Oscar said he won't fight Puerto Ricans because his wife is Puerto Rican?

I still think that Oscar will fight Hatton, so maybe there are possibilities of Mayweather-Cotto. But Arum was also talking of a possible Cotto-Margarito showdown.

They'd fight at 147, Oscar will be weight drianed and go down at least once to a wicked body shot. Even though I'd rather see Cotto fight Margarito (to bannish him from the welterweight picture even further) this fight is smart because it gives Cotto and Mayweather a recent common opponent and Cotto will probably be more dominant against Oscar thatn PBF was, so the hype can be built for Cotto, who will be popular enough to fight PBF after his destruction of Oscar. I just can't believe Oscar doesn't mind losing every single high profile fight these days!

It certainly sounds to me, and other posters of this thread as well, that Cotto is taking a safer route. 5 years ago, DelaHoya may have been the more marketable choice, but with Floyd's undefeated streak and wins over Oscar, Hatton and numerous others, I can't imagine this fight generating more money than a Cotto-Mayweather showdown. To put it bluntly, stating that this fight is the better move for Cotto, is somewhat of an insult to the fans who are not so blind as to see whats really going on.

PBF is not probably quicker than Cotto. He's much much quicker.

If Cotto boxes against Mayweather he's gonna get his ass kicked in the center of the ring. :rofl

Good, so hopefully Cotto beats Oscar in fan-friendly fashion and gets a lot of exposure in doing so.

Cotto's market value will increase and hopefully there is even more money for a Mayweather-Cotto bout.

Then maybe Arum and Floyd will stop acting like children and put aside their differences.

Mayweather-Cotto is the #1 fight to be made in the sport of boxing.
