Cotto is similar to Chavez in the way he applies pressure, however me is far more well rounded then Chavez. That said, Chavez had an iron jaw, and was more effective at getting inside on his opponents. No way would Chavez have chose to box against Mosley at any stage though.

    What are you talking about?

Since when are Hector Camacho, Meldrick Taylor, Jose Luis Ramirez, Edwin Rosario, Ruben Castillo, Juan LaPorte, Frankie Randall, Greg Haugen, Roger Mayweather, Bazooka Limon, and Mario Martinez cab drivers?

Chavez beat excellent competition - maybe not ATG competition, but certainly enough excellent fighters to be considered an ATG himself. He won his first 88 professional fights, lost only 6 total, and was involved in 31 title fights.

I think Chavez has a great resume, but not the level of Armstrong, Leonard, or Duran.

Even though Meldrick Taylor was badly hurt, I still feel that he did deserve those last 3 or 4 seconds and the win. Regardless, he would have been destroyed physically for the remainder of his career, but at least he would have had the satisfaction of beating Chavez. However, I can see where Richard Steele would stop the fight - he didn't care about time, all he cared about was the safety of the fighter.

Yup, Pernell CLEARLY beat Chavez (8-4 or 9-3)

I rank him number 1 all time for Mexican fighters - Sanchez, Lopez, Olivares, Barrera, Morales, and Canto are behind him. Who do you have ahead of him?

no Meldrick was dropped hard and counted out, aka he was TKO'd plain and simple. Chavez did deserve to lose the Pernell fight though, but if Chavez isn't the greatest Mexican boxer, than who is?

Cotto is exactly like Chavez, bar the iron chin, the iron will, the better defense, the exquisite left rip to the body and the pressure Chavez can apply. Otherwise they are birds of a feather :good

Freddy, you oughta be ashamed. Cotto is good but nowhere near deserving of this comparison.

Sorry bro, didn't see that before, or I wouldn't have bothered posting. Even then, the warning signs should have been there, but it's a much more understandable time to jump the gun on an assessment like that.

Chavez was so much better than Cotto. No knock on Cotto, but Julio was better defensively and every other way. He probably didn't punch as hard as Cotto did, but everything was sharp. Chavez was a pretty sound fighter, and I rarely remember Julio's face being marked up ever except near the nose once or twice. Cotto is good but a little reckless, and that has been his problem in his two losses.

it would have been a great fight. At this point maybe Pacman outpoints Chavez with his speed. I do see Pacman winning, but Chavez was great with underrated handspeed.
