This may have been said before, so forgive me if this thread has already been done.
Cotto is a great fighter in my opinion willing to take on all comers, the names on his resume, win or lose speak for themselves, but I never noticed until someone made the comment that he has never beaten a world champion to win a world title, sure some of the fighters he beat went on to win world titles or were former champs and his next fight will be against a defending champion but does the fact he has never beaten an active (when he fought them) world champ affect his legacy?

Personally I dont think so, due to his defences, but what do you think?

I think it affects it a tad bit.

The one time he stepped up to beat a current champion he was KTFO.

Also, his resume is made up of B level fighters at best, with the exception of Shane Mosley on a close and somehwta contreversial fight.

In any other era Cotto would just be a B level fighter.

not really , abc titles aint worth much anyway ,so beating very good fighter means much more than beating weak or average beltholder nowadays. Also u could arguably count clottey as "champion, during reign" as he had been forced to vacate his ibf belt, right before they fought and havent lost it in the ring.

I always thought his defences were impressive, in his WBO LWW & WW title fights he fought
21-0 Pinto (admittedly he was untested)
Former champ and big punching Bailey
    Former champ Corley
28-0 and big punching future champ Torres
    21-0 future champ Malignaggi
23-0 and future champ Quintana who holds a win over P Williams
    Judah
    Mosely
    Clottey
and before winning a world title beat future champs Ndou and Maussa

Pretty good. He was a vicious body puncher and his fights are always exciting.

Clottey was an active champion but dropped the title to make this fight rather than fighting his mandatory, don't think that counts but it's worth noting.

He's always gonna be up there in my eyes...I never get tired of watching him fight..win or lose..And as far as his resume..It's a pretty damn good one!! not alot of fighters have a resume like that and have good records to show for

He will be regarded as a fighter who could have been very high ATG had he had either a better chin or a better defense.

His career reminds me of Vargas.

I see where your coming from with that statement. But Cotto has won at a higher level in my eyes and won titles in 2 weights
