Cotto isn't a champion, he's a WBO titleholder. And I suspect it has given him some bargaining power, do you know how he's being compensated for the fight? He wouldn't have taken the fight if it didn't make sense for him, both financially and for his career.
So he still is the champion then isn't he ? There's no getting away from it, he is the champion of the WBO. Whether you like it or not there are 4 major belts now and the holder of any of these belts has the right to be classed as a world champion. Thats just the way it is now
Depends on your perception. I consider Mosley the champion, as he's clearly the number one. Berto? He's a titleholder. That Bok whose name escapes me? Titleholder. We've done the belts thing (again) recently so I digress. The point is, alphabet straps have ceased to be the centre of negotiations, how many have we seen dropped as of late? Cotto is not stupid, he would have used his, apparent, objection to the weight and belt being on the line to negotiate the best package for him; secretly knowing the weight was no big deal. Personally I think the catchweight was unecessary and I don't like them but, when you're in Pac's position, his team can make these requests. It's up to the individual whether they agree to them.
Yeah thats fair enough but the worst in this whole disagreement is definately the WBO how they can back Pacquiao and force the belt to be on the line at 145 is beyond me. It should have been down to Cotto. He could have come to the agreement with Team Pacquiao and had it in the contract that if he comes in over 145 he'll pay financial penalties as has happened, but the WBO came in and said it would have to be at 145 :huh
Because, like all sanctioning bodies, they're only interested in money. The WBO, particularly, are seeing this as a chance to give their belt some exposure in high profile fights. They're not interested in the good of the sport, only lining their pockets. They should be treated with the contempt they deserve.
And the WBC - This fight had nothing whatsoever to do with them however they've hijacked it with their shitty Diamond Belt :-(
Don't you remember Sulaiman whinging about WBC belts being dropped by fighters who, he believed, had made their names by holding his title? Well this was his response, although they're not actually charging any money for this belt being on the line (this time) it still gets their name attached to a fight that had nothing to do with them.
Can I just say,Cotto looked great at the weigh in.Didn't have that pale/green skin, didn't look gaunt.Looks strong.Manny looks alot denser now aswell
