Personally, I think Abraham for this fight would have been better. Kelly would have been fighting hungry AND to prove a point. If we take Kelly at his word, this fight was about fan payback. One poster (who is a trained fighter) that went to school with Kelly's brothers thought the plan all along was to give the home town crowd some rounds and then close it out big. Rubio got the script though. Why do you think he was crying in his corner a the end of 9? He knew what was coming. :good
Were they supposed to be showing major improvements? :? They were fights against tin cans. Easy gimme fights. Arum said "here ya go...help yourself back onto the win train". Confidence builders or w/e, that is all.
Wow, I can't believe how disrespectful you are by calling Michael Jennings a bum. The guy is a former British Welterweight Champion (although currently ranked #4) he isn't a bum.
I don't think the Cotto fight proved much about whether or not Cotto still has it. He would have to fight a stronger fighter to see if he is the same. Pavlik on the other hand didn't take the kind of punishment Cotto took. Pavlik looked like his oldself.
The easiest way to lift your self esteem in your own mind is to PRETEND someone else is less than actually DO SOMETHING with your own life. Why do you think there are so many haters here? They, who never took a single punch, would NEVER take a knee, quit on their stool, etc...... A top guy wins? Well, he beat a bum. Same concept as racism.
pavlik didnt have as much to prove as cotto did... the type of loss pavlik took fighters take all the time & rebound from... his lack of experience is more or less what lost him that fight the type of loss cotto took is the type of loss that has destroyed fighters in the past.. he did what it took to win but somehow margarito pulled it out... cheating or not.... either way both of these fights were just to get cotto & pavliks feet wet... well see whats really good when cotto & pavlik face some real comp.. if they crumble when they face real comp.. well know that the losses have gotten to them... can you believe cotto was p4p #3 before his loss to margarito?! not that he didnt deserve it but thats just amazing he was really on his way to stardom..
i still think cottos has improvements to make defensively hes still ripe for uppercuts and body shots and straight rights
Let's see. Who's opinion to take on this. Fitzgerald's or Tom Miller's? To me, it looked like an easy workout for Kelly. He worked the whole body, both up and down and listened to trainer Jack Loew when he needed settling down. He connected when he needed to connect and in the seventh and eighth rounds, he put his power and punch together so that there was no question that by the end of the ninth round that would be the end of the fight. If I had to give Kelly a grade, it would be an A-minus for his title defense, Miller said. I'll have top give the edge to Miller's opinion on this one.
absolutely. if a fighter has power when he's young and also up through the ranks and is naturally aggressive it's usually at the cost of defence it's very hard to change that. it's a common theme with a lot of power hitters and often it's their chin which has to compensate.
Cotto fought a guy who was fairly agile and reasonably quick. He was better than I expected, but Miguel still took him apart in 5 rounds. It takes 2 to make a good fight, and Rubio just never showed up. He ran like a rabbit all night. In addition, Pavlik let Rubio off the hook at least 6 times. He let him go 3 times in the first 3 rounds. Instead of declaring war like he usually does, he patiently, systematicly broke him down. I know FOR A FACT that when Leow kept telling Kelly, "Stick to the plan," He was telling him not to knock Rubio out. KP still made his mandatory cry and quit.
You guys are kidding, right? Jennings to Cotto is not anywhere near the same as Rubio to Pavlik. Rubio was much stiffer (PROVEN) competition than Jennings was for Cotto. Can't believe OP
I think Kelly may have had the green light if he could get a first minute KO. He did throw one wild hay maker early. After that he settled down. That could be what Miller was referring to in the article I linked to above.
