The rules are broken for him, and he designed the framework for that to happen himself by making clear he wasn't going to follow the rules anyway.
Yes, but historically and money wise he's a huge victim here. He has to go up to a lesser historical division to make his mark and earnings, and who's to say the same thing won't happen there if he knocks a couple of contenders clean out? The SMW division has been duckers central after the Super 6, so it will probably end up the same.

Surely he will eventually be forced to do one or the other?

I think you're right to be more annoyed with the WBC and I also think this shows why people should care a bit less about this fight. Everybody knows GGG is the best middleweight and would destroy Cotto and the belt isn't that important because of all the political BS involved. Imo Cotto vs GGG isn't necessary and GGG having the WBC and lineal championship isn't necessary either. It would be nice if GGG could eventually get those titles but it's not a big deal imo as the belts are often spread around these days.

Technically correct but yeah the point was it's the governing body's job to enforce the rules. Cotto is just doing what he is being allowed to do which is the same thing most smart people would do if they were in his position.

There's some truth to that but as I said boxing (and life) isn't fair. Boxers often don't get the money they deserve, the decisions they deserve etc.

Same thing with the historical thing. That is just unfortunately the nature of boxing with it's politics, business side, multiple titles etc.

Golovkin is still doing very well though, he is earning good money, gaining recognition for his ability and accomplishments and building up a big name for himself making big fights possible in the future. If/when Cotto vacates/is stripped I don't think it will have a huge impact on Golovkin.

Here's why it's a big deal for GGG to get a Cotto a Canelo fight. GGG needs those fights to raise his profile. There are 3 guys in the world around his weight that he can fight to raise his profile amongst casuals. Cotto/Canelo/Froch and that's it. He's 33 and he wants to bring enough to the table on his own that he can make serious money no matter who he fights from here on out. He also wants to be a big enough name and $$$ draw that other top fighters at 160 will stop avoiding him if he decides to stay at MW.

Just as important as all that is for GGG to be the A-side going into negotiations with Ward down the line. If that fight happens - and I favor Ward heavily if it does - GGG will need to be able to have more than equal say when it comes gloves/ref/judges in order to have a shot. Particularly when it comes to the ref because we all know how Andre fights. A ref that allows Ward to jab/straight right and fall into a clinch or headbutt away to his hearts desire will reduce GGG's chances of pulling off an upset from slim to very nearly none.

** Please no one take this as me "hating" Andre Ward. I think he's a special fighter, hence why I heavily favor him against GGG. I'm just being realistic about some of his dirtier tendencies.

Fighting Canelo and/or Cotto would be good for GGG, they are big names and smaller than him so it's a big deal for him in that sense. Realistically however, those fights may not happen because Cotto shouldn't be at 160 and he might move down or retire before fighting GGG. Maybe Canelo doesn't belong at 160 either, he is completely unproven there. GGG shouldn't be fighting them at 154 as he is unproven there and could be badly drained and everybody complains about catch-weights.

Well it can't be argued that Golovkin doesn't have Gaele in dominant fashion.

Why is Geale big enough yet Golovkin isn't?

Call a duck a duck. Quack.

He chose Geale over Golovkin because he might be able to beat Geale and because Golovkin would punch holes into him. It isn't rocket science.

I hope Geale wins! I'm a GGG fan, but was enjoying watching Geale trying to outhustle Gennady. It would be irony if Geale stomps Cotto.

True but I think people will understand what I'm trying to say. Everybody knows GGG would paste Cotto and everybody knows GGG is the man at 160 so imo there's no need for quite so much complaining that GGG hasn't got that title yet. GGG becoming WBC/lineal champ basically makes no difference to anything. Fighters make the belts imo.

Just hand the title back Cotto..

This is the ultimate example of a paper champ.

And you're the middleweight champ fighting a guy the other champ obliterated yet come out with this? Just admit it, you want to use the belt (which was heavily stacked in your favour to win with Maravilla clearly having no knees, but he did what he had to do and had the ***** to go up) to obtain the maximum amount of money possible without facing Golovkin or losing before the Canelo payday.

What if Mayweather fought Algieri or Golovkin fought Kirkland now ffs lol, Cotto deserves to get slaughtered here, just like Khan.
