He was the top MW in the planet with the resume to prove it and in the top 10 p4p rankings at the time. GGG won a vacant title knocking out bums, best wins being Curtis Stevens, who's splitting draws with Rosado on BKB and Matthew Macklin, the same man who got knocked out by the light hitting Heiland a year after GGG beat him. You can't rank someone ahead for knocking out tomato cans, you just can't. And if nobody wants to fight with you, move up and fight bigger men like all the greats in the past did. But that's another discussion. Yes, disliking someone for speaking their mind on another fighter and making career choices to support their family is childish. It's dumb fanboyism that plagues these forums. Cotto comes to war each time and you hate him because.. wait.. he's arrogant in interviews... :nut You bring up DeGale because you're reaching. I simply do not have the time to follow every domestic level boxers fights. I watch their fights when I can, especially if it's a Saturday and boxing is airing that day. If you have all this free time to do these things, then that's fine, seems a little weird but okay. Was I supposed to follow Audley Harrison's or Zou Shiming's career as well? I didn't even follow Ward's career before the Super Six. It's kind of weird that you fault me for this. Extremely weird. Even weirder that you keep bringing it up. DeGale was a domestic level contender before he rose up to the occasion and beat a highly skilled and rated fighter in Dirrell in his hometown. Now he's a champ, more well known(especially in England) and making moves.
We have a serious casual on our hands. It's okay that you're a casual, just don't get uppity with real fans. :good
I'm off to bed now. Take this time to watch a little boxing, it'll do you some good for the next time we run into one another on here :good
Wait, man. Are you really telling me that you have the time to see random prospects and domestic level contenders fights? Wtf? You didn't argue against it, so I'm assuming it's true. My God, do you work? Do you have a wife, a gf? A social life?
the fight with murray was at most a draw! thats boxing!! styles makes fights! why fraizer was blast by foreman??
Son, I don't want to get into discussing this on here as I've seen how this has gone down a bad road with Ellerbe/Hans. So I'll send the majority of this response in a private message and then never discuss it again. I'll say this here. If you consider a top 5 SMW (before the Dirrell fight) to be a 'domestic level' contender then you're even more of a casual than I thought.
:rofl Come on man. Murray should have had 2 KDs against Martinez and boxed him close enough to deserve a win. He maybe won 1 round against GGG and then got stopped.
If GGG is his mandatory then Cotto will either fight him or drop the belt. People are making way too much of a big deal out of this imo. It's not like Cotto has been at MW for 5 years and fought 15 middleweight while avoiding GGG. He has 1 voluntary defence scheduled. How often do guys fight fight the #1 guy in the division in their 1st defence after winning a title anyway?
Most champions don't wait a full year to make their first defense... And under the WBC rules a champion is obligated to defend his title against his mando at least once a year. Well GGG is his mando and Cotto has just been granted an exemption to pursue the Canelo fight and not fight GGG after the Geale fight... So GGG IS Cotto's mando and NO, Cotto won't be fighting him OR dropping the belt. I don't blame Cotto for not wanting to fight him. I find some of the things he's been saying to be a little beneath him and less than what we've come to expect from him. But I'm more upset with the WBC than Cotto.
Not often, but there's one big issue in this one. Cotto fights Geale exactly 1year after capturing his title and his window for a voluntary should already have been closed. The WBC however have issued that he has to fight GGG at least somewhere in September, or he will be stripped. Now it's already known that Cotto won't and he will likely fight Canelo instead (more money, more chance on actually winning). But the question is if the WBC actually strips Cotto if that fight happens. Big chance to get a Mexican MW champion and a big name as well. Who of course would get his own voluntary first and then somewhere late 2016 might actually have the cojones to fight GGG who has probably moved up by then. Might very well be that the best MW of the last decade never gets his hands on the linear belt, due to bull like this. You think that's in any way fair?
No need to ask Cotto since everyone knows the answer. Triple is too dangerous. The funny thing is that even Geale has the skills to upset Cotto. I would love it. To run away from one opponent only to get upset by his victim.
Fair from Cotto because he doesn't make the rules and he isn't breaking any rules. Fair from the WBC? No but tbh boxing isn't very fair in general, belts/titles don't mean that much and everybody knows GGG is the man at 160.
Well, that's not entirely accurate. He IS breaking the rules, the rules are just loosely/poorly enforced.
