Tito is 5 '11, was at 140 when he was 17-18 years old and has a lot more power than Cotto. Those two really aren't comparable.
That doesn't change the fact that he was allot more effective at 140 then he is at 147. When cotto was making 140 comfortably with no issue he looked great it wasn't until the Torrez and Malignaggi that his weight was mentioned as an issue. Fans also seem to forget Cotto fought all of the small welters until meeting margarito. Quintanana , zab and urkal were all small welters , two were former fighters from lighter devisions ..
i think he'll do well at jr middle, not in the recent future but maybe in 5-8 years from now he might have to move up, and he will always carry his power through the divisions. Being small could be an advantage, he would be hard to hit, and he will allways hit hard.
You kind of made the opposite of the point you wanted to make... :thumbsup But you hit it on the head none the less, there's a bit of a size difference between LW and WW and a sizable talent gap too.
Cotto looks comfortable at 147, he will fight at higher weight classes, but not while still in his prime, unless of course a huge money fight lures him up. But right now there's more than enough business at 147.
I don't think he'd be able to handle the heavy hitters at 154 like Kirkland who would really test Cotto's Chin. Skill wise Cotto might have more skills than anyone from 147-160 but he's simply not big enough to compete at the elite level at the higher weights.
I think the higher you go up in weight the greater you technique needs to be and the less reliant you have to be about beating up your opponent, especially when you are small. I think this is why Spinks could go up to 154 and be a champ and arguable be beat Jermaine Taylor when he was the undisputed MW king.
