Hatton at 140 and Cotto at 147.

    Both would be close fights.

Hatton can be found out at 147 but is by no means terrible at 147.
I view the collazo fight as close but hatton as the winner, his prep was not good for the fight and he looked bad towards the end of the fight.
Against Floyd he was broken mentally, lost the plot and the ref was not a good choice for hatton. Floyd won convincingly but hey every time you fight at welterweight you aint gonna be fighting Floyd (unless your oscar :tong).

So i dont think that Hatton vs Cotto is onesided for either at 140 or 147.

The best three fighters Hatton has faced, Tszyu (P4P #3), Castillo (P4P top 15) and Mayweather (P4P #1), resulted in 2 wins and a loss. Sure, Hatton has started to look poor recently, but it's not all down to the opposition. Hatton destruction of Castillo was impressive.

He got shook? Are you serious? Every time Torres landed something good he did a Zab Judah impression. I like Cotto, but he was a KO waiting to happen at 140lbs. His chin has improved drastically. If it was Judah or Mosley who landed those shots at 140lbs, he would have lost both fights.

And yes, 7lbs does make a difference. When a fighter is draining down, the water on the brain also goes. Thus, punches cause more damage to the brain. Look at McClellan. The reason he is in the state he is now, is partly because he was draining weight against Jackson and Benn. His brain lacked the amount of water needed to prevent permanent damage.

When a fighter has be force themselves to be sick and have diarrhea to make weight, they are puttig themselves in serious danger. Not so much because they are going to be weak, but because the body cannot cope with losing so much weight.
You mention De La Hoya which is funny to me. See, under different circumstances you could have said "Roberto Duran won a world title 25lbs above his prime weight, so why couldn't De La Hoya?". DLH was an awful fight at 160lbs. Truly awful. Why couldn't he move up 13ls when Duran could move up 25lbs? Genetics. Some fighters can move up easily, others can't. Simple as that. There is no rule regarding how much weight a fighter can add and still be effective.

Aside from Hatton, the following fighters did not carry added weight well.

De La Hoya (Good at 154lbs, rubbish at 160lbs)
Bob Foster (Awesome at 175lbs, mediocre at heavyweight)
Wilfredo Gomez (Nowhere near as good at 126lbs as he was at 122)
Thomas Hearns (Better at 154lbs than 147lbs, because, like Cotto, he was often drained)
Jose Napoles (ATG at 147lbs, but didn't do anything at 160lbs)
Sugar Ray Robinson (He was perhaps the best ever at 160lbs, but 175lbs? No chance)

Then you have the fighters who change their styles to suit moving up in weight. Winky Wright, for example. This is something Hatton can't do. He was the smaller man against Mayweather, yet tried to outmuscle him. He didn't have the smarts to outwit him, nor the strength to bully him. He didn't stand a chance.

Hatton, like many others, did not carry the weigh effectively.

I'll give you Tzyu. he looked unstoppable up until the hatton fight and was a top p4p guy. I will not consider the Castillo win a good one. In the Tzyu fight, Tzyu was a heavy favorite and a top p4p guy and people changed their tune after the fight. The Castillo fight on the other hand was a different story. Everyone knew that Castillo was shot which is why Hatton was such a heavy favorite. Castillo had been through a brutal fight that took a lot out of him and had outgrown his best weight. Hatton beat a shot smaller fighter. He did it in impressive fashion but I would not consider it an impressive win.

As far as DLH is concerned keep in mind that 154 was not his original weight. he did move up well in weight from 130 all the way to 154 where he finally reached his limit. same deal with Robinson 160 was his limit but he did make the move well from 147 to 160

Since Cotto was always struggling to make 140 . . . I'll pick at 147 only.

The point was a simple one. DLH rose from 130 to 160lbs and has been succesful. PBF has done the same across 5 divisions. Ray Robinson did it etc etc. Hatton has risen 7lbs and you honestly think the reason why he lost was because of an extra 7lbs?!?

Like i said and il say again weight is NOT the issue here. The issue here is Hatton style. If all the elite fighters were all at 140 like 5 years ago Ricky wouldnt have got a look in. Now they`ve all moved up he tested the waters at the higher weight and went scuttling back with paltry excuses about he doesnt carry the extra 7lbs well enough.

As for 7lbs making a diffrence in terms of drying out and making weight im well aware of that fact. But the bottom line is Cotto turned pro at 140 and spent the best part of his career at 140. There is no point in debating Cotto vs Hatton at 140 when its apparent that Cotto now cant make the weight effectively. If where going to debate such a stupid point why not debate Hatton vs Mike Tyson at 140.Its completely nonsensical.

Im not picking Hatton, but the match-up is interesting.

Id like to see someone test Cotto's gut with alot of body punches.

Cotto was too weak and had no legs/chin at 140, particularly the latter stages of his career there. Imagine the half-dead Cotto that fought Malignaggi against the monster Hatton that brutalised Zoo.

At 147 Cotto is a different animal entirely. He brutally stops Hatton at 147.

At 140 Cotto is too weak and Hatton takes him down

I think we're talking if they'd have fought while he was at 140. Now, if Cotto made 140 he'd be so weak Hatton would stop in with the first punch landed

Cotto all day. People act like Cotto was a bum at 140 who was struggling against every one. Since when is it a sin to be hurt in boxing? So what Cotto was rocked by Torres. He got caught flush and still didnt go down. Torres actually pushed him down to the ground. A weak chin is when someone gets KO'd. That has never happened. Corley caught him on the temple, not on the chin. So this whole china-chinned argument is a joke. Cotto was brutally stopping people at 140. Just look at the faces of Maussa, Paulie, Abdullaev, and Branco and then tell me Ricky Hatton can beat Cotto. Hatton is one of the most overrated fighters in recent history. The only victories he has of note are against an aged Kosta who was not even in fighting shape and washed Castillo. Every time Hatton stepped up the level of competition, he looked average at best. Everytime Cotto stepped up the level in comp, he has looked beyond stellar.

I'm telling you there is no way Hatton beats Cotto at any weight. Cotto is the superior fighter in every aspect of the game. He's much much smarter. We all know Hatton is about the dumbest fighter out there. He is stronger at both weights in my opinion. He is a better boxer. He cuts off the ring better. He is a better combination puncher. AND contrary to what idiots say Cotto is a true pressure boxer whereas Hatton doesnt pressure well at all. He smothers his punches and holds way too much.

Cotto takes this all day at any weight!!
