Week after week signs are getting more obvious that every fighter just wants the/a fight which brings the most money.
    A few examples:
Hopkins very carefully choosing his opponents
Cotto calling out DLH instead of the man he should fight and the public want to see.
    You go on and on.

Day by day boxing is dying from this. It's not about status and passion anymore. It's more and more only for the money. The pure element of macho boxing are slowly going away.

This is the beginning of the end of boxing.

    Man Shut Up!

Cotto's not calling out Mayweather - big deal. Maybe Cotto knows what most of us knows - he's not ready for Mayweather.

With his name being a big draw and Oscar being Oscar - why wouldn't Cotto go for the money and then the title.

Maybe you forgot that once you turn pro - it's not really about the competition anymore - it's about the MONEY!!!! If it don't make DOLLARS - it don't make SENSE.

Nobody wants to end up like Joe Louis, fighters put alot in and they want to ensure thier financial well being. Too much emphasis is placed on an undefeated record, losses are not looked upon very kindly. You lose- you're "exposed" and your stock drops and your drawing power is affected. That is why fighters choose to cash in first and take the risk second.

Boxing has always been a business, filled with sleazy scum in suits, and fighters looking to make money and improve their lives.

There is nothing new about this at all.

    at the "pureness".

    When was it "pure"?

When The Ring was selling its ratings in the 70s to Don King? Or how about when Frankie Carbo and Blinky Palermo ran boxing in the 50s? How about the days when sometimes guys had to throw fights for title shots?

did I say they didn't care about money? No
Did I say boxing being a business is new? No

You are more stupid then I thougth considering you are posting here for a while now.

In the old days they just faced EVERYONE. No it's all about strategically building your undefeated record. And boxers who SHOULD face eachother don't because their management is afraid that their fighters stock goes down.

I guess you never had the brains to actually THINK a bit about what's going on.
Ah well, everybody has his level.

You'd go for the money too. It's about setting yourself up financially so you don't find yourself fighting well into your 40's just to pay off your bills. I'd go for the money too. After a while the dollars will add up and you'll find yourself in the mega fights everyone wants.

Gimme a ****ing break. Most boxers end up with jack **** in the bank and brain damage, so I don't blame the ones who want to secure their futures and are able to do so. Cotto/DLH would greatly raise Cotto's stock and guarantee a fight with Mayweather if he won.

Honestly, after the past year, I think it's time to stop bemoaning the current condition of the sport. At least for now, for all the BS politics, it's doing well.

    No.

Tell that to Charley Burley who never got a title shot.

Tell that to Ezzard Charles who never got a title shot at light heavyweight.

Or how about Nino Valdes, who beat Ezzard Charles at heavyweight, but watched Charles get the title shot instead despite losing to Valdez.

How about the black contenders like Joe Jeanette and Sam Langford? Did Jack Johnson, who was quoted as saying something like "a champ should face all those fighters who aspire to be champs" or something, face them? No, he instead defended against the white fighters who provided larger paydays.

    The reward/risk ratio was better.

Same thing today. However, the top fighters generally get paid more, so they don't fight 20+ a year like guys like Robinson or Greb or whatever. So they fight less. Since they paydays were so much lower for the rest, they fought more often, and therefore fought more guys.

Look at the heavyweight champions before Joe Louis. They got paid good money, which is why so many of them defended their title once every eon.
