I'm not saying I believe it, I'm just telling people to be consistent and, if not, point out the hypocrites. :smooch Rick Glaser is the one who reported 97,000 PPV buys for Golovkin/Lemieux. He is reporting only 650,000 PPV buys for Cotto/Canelo which would be a disaster. With that said, Rick Glaser has been uncredited by other writers who say he has no idea what he's talking about. So, If you believe other reporters, then it's 150K for Golovkin/Lemieux and 900K for Cotto/Canelo. If you believe Glaser, then believe BOTH his numbers. 97K for Golovkin/Lemieux and 650K for Cotto/Canelo. But don't be picking and choosing PPV numbers that suit your agenda! If your a fan of Canelo and discredit GGG's PPV buys by using the 97K number then you better use the 650K that Glaser reports as well:good For the people who believed Glaser over the other reporters (aka who believe the 97K number), what say you on this number for Cotto/Canelo? Remember, they needed 1 mill buys to breakeven.
If these 650,000 buys are true- which I don't believe they are- then PPV is legitimately dying or Mayweather and Pacquiao are in a world of their own.
The Mayweather v Pac fight certainly didn't help the institution of ppv. In the old days, there was maybe one or two closed circuit fights a year and they were reserved for major fights. Now, fights like Mayorga v Mosley are ppv. Ridiculous.
650,000 is actually pretty decent. Not everyone is going to be an Oscar, Floyd or Manny. Dont judge everyone off their insane numbers. Also, maybe if numbers come down a bit, then people will stop making threads about how many people purchased an event off a TV station.
That's not 2 men's fault that other people fail. It's not Floyd or Mannya job to make other fighters rich and popular. Guys on this site have a habit of blaming others for another mans problem. Be men and not babies.
Yeah, 650,000 is pretty decent, but not when you spent over 30 million dollars on the card. That's disastrous. That means they only made about 9.7 million dollars in PPV. Again, I think GBP is fine. I don't believe the number. More reporters announced 900K, so I'll take that.
Not to toot my own horn but... http://www.boxingforum24.com/showpost.php?p=17585824&postcount=29 Of course I'm tooting my own horn.
Glazer exposing the exxaggerated numbers like he did with Mayweather Maidnada 2 keep up the good work Glaser !
Glaser always publishes the lowest numbers, so props for maintaining consistency across the comparisons. If it was 650k, the promotion likely didn't hit breakeven from domestic PPV. Updated rough numbers using 650k instead of the 900k high end estimate: $65 average price (assuming 50% bought regular definition at $60 and 50% at the $70 HD price) x 650k = $42.2 million 50% of that gets taken off the top from the cable companies: 42.2 x 50%= $21.1 Subtract $20 million for guaranteed main event purses: 21.1 - 20= $1.1 million I don't have the undercard numbers handy, but out of that, the undercard needed to be funded. Then the remainder is split in half. Cotto's $15 million guaranteed hit the card hard. Canelo got $5 million, but his deal with TV Azteca means he got compensated very well on top of the 25% split he took. There are also any back end residuals based on sales owed to the fighters to account for, which I don't know the details of. Finally, we've got the cost of promotion itself to take into account, along with other revenue streams- principally foreign TV rights, gate sales, and sponsorships, etc.
