So, i rewatched the fight and analyzed every round without the sound to be the least biased possible. I had Cotto winning 114-113 last night and now i have him 115-112. For those who disagree, post your scorecards and tell me which rounds i gave to Cotto you gave to Clottey and why. Round 1: 10-8 Cotto. Close round with both men working of the jab and showing a very tight defense. Nether landing anything significant until the end of the round where Cotto knocks Clottey down with a hard jab. Round 2: 10-9 Clottey Clottey doing more than Cotto in this round, landing the most significants punches, scoring very well with clean uppercuts on many occasions early as well as with some nice clean right hands in the second half of the round. Round 3: 10-9 Cotto This round looks a bit like the first in the fact that both men try to get shots trough the opponent's tight guard but nether lands anything significant. Its different from the first in the aspect that both are now putting their punches in combinations and mixing up well but then again they can't land anything that would make them win the round clearly. In fact the only punches they land are partially blocked but Cotto is way more active, throwing twice as many punches as Clottey and that's why i gave him the round but he was accidentally head butted by Clottey which could have cost him more than a round on the long term.... Round 4 : 10-9 Cotto Cotto feeling the urgency of the cut, he goes to work throwing beautiful combinations. Clottey blocks most of them but Cotto manages to score with many shots, including some good body shots and a good combination at about 2mins40 followed by a good sequence sealed that round for me. Clottey fought back well in spots, but Cotto kept him in his guard too often and Josh trowed only one shot at a time in to many occasions for him to be able to take the round. Round 5 : 10-9 Clottey Cotto starting the round well, staying in the pocket and working with combinations to the head and body, but without landing anything dangerous. One minute into the round, Clottey lands two solid right hands that Cotto has obviously trouble to see coming. Clottey is also scoring well with his jab and again with the right until he falls on the canvas and appears to hurt his knee with about 1 minute to go. Both trading punches in the last moments but nether lands anything. Note: Cotto is ahead on my card and on most cards and could've stopped if he wanted and he would probably have won the fight...The man has heart and pride Round 6: 10-9 Cotto This is without a doubt Cotto's best round of the fight and probably the one that is the easiest to score. He stays in the pocket for the first minute before bringing Clottey in a corner for almost to minutes, working with hard, trowing some mean punches that don't always get trough but that seem to take their effect on Joshua. He scores well with everything, mixing up his punches really well....That's a flashback of the old Miguel we see there...Huge Cotto round Round 7 : 10-9 Clottey Cotto scoring with a left uppercut early, and he moves well around the ring, picking his spots to fire his combinations for the first half. Clottey comes back hard in the second half, landing clean right hands and taking this round despite the fact that Miguel tries to finish strong. Round 8: 10-9 Clottey Both starting throwing flurries, but Clottey is more accurate and gets the better of the two. As the round goes on, Clottey fires some really mean punches. His best round so far IMO. Round 9: 10-9 Cotto Cotto starts the round on his toes, moving and jabbing well. Clottey is stalking him but he can't do much to catch Cotto until he finally land a right hand at the beginning of the second minute. Clottey lands a good uppecut with 50 seconds left. Cotto backs him up to the ropes and fires a flurry. He steals the round on my card with a strong finish in the last 45 seconds were he caught Clottey with some nice clean punches, the best punches of the round from both men. Round 10: 10-9 Clottey This round starts exacly like the 9th, with Cotto moving, jabbing and occasionally flurrying while Clottey is stalking but Clottey is throwing less than in the 9th and Cotto is slipping most of what he throws while Clottey is blocking most of what Cotto throws. Joshua finally gets to Cotto in the last minute, landing the right hand again as well as some good combinations which gives him the round despite 2 big left hooks from Cotto in the last 10 seconds. Round 11: 10-9 Cotto Clottey lands a good right hand early. Cotto then starts to use angles instead of moving around the ring and lands a left hook and throws flurries in which some punches land on target. He restarts to jab and move. Clottey stalking and getting impatient and makes a few mistakes on which Cotto capitalizes with a right and and a left uppercut. Cotto fires a nice combination, then turns southpaw while Clottey is stalking but not throwing much. Another nice combo by Miguel stops Clottey in his tracks but Joshua goes back to stalking right after. I scored this one clearly for Cotto as Clottey didn't do enough. Cotto needed that round and he got it. Round 12: 10-9 Lederman has the fight even while i got Cotto up by 2 meaning if stays on his feet the whole round he's got this. Both men look confident, as they throw nice combos as each other. Cotto then lands a clean hard jab which has Clottey a bit off balance. More jabs and movement by Cotto, more stalking by Clottey. Miguel lands a left hook while Clottey doesn't throw enough and when he does its only one shot at a time while Miguel looks surprisingly fresh, bouncing on his toes. Left hand by Cotto lands on Josh's forehead. Right hand by Clottey followed by a punch behind the head from Cotto that gives both fighter a break. Cotto lands a low blow and two good left hook before Clottey realizes he is losing the round and starts to throw but he gets caught by another left hook. He finishes stronger than he fought most of the round but this is a clear Cotto round.... That being said my final score is 115-112 Cotto. I would like to have your comments, especially the people that said Clottey won, I would like to tell me your scorecard and for the rounds in which you disagree with me, i would like to know why you gave them to Clottey.
I had it 114-113 Cotto 1: Cotto (+ KD) 2: Clottey 3: Clottey 4: Cotto 5: Clottey 6: Cotto 7: Clottey 8: Clottey 9: Clottey 10: Cotto (I realize this is probably the most controversial one, but between defense, ring generalship, and the fact that Clottey maybe landed 2 punches all round, I gave it to Cotto) 11: Cotto 12: Cotto Knockdown clearly made the difference for me, as Clottey was winning the first until he fell over.
Clottey-Cotto 114-113 1.Cotto(+Kd) 2.Clottey 3.Clottey 4.Cotto 5.Clottey 6.Cotto 7.Clottey 8.Clottey 9.Cotto 10.Clottey 11.Clottey 12.Cotto
Same as you but with rounds 2 and 9 even. I was live at MSG so got a different perspective as most people
I had Clotty winning 114-113. Cotto was forced to run the majority of the fight. I don't think it was a fair fight because that cut bothered Cotto alot, he couldn't see from that left eye. Other than that, I had Clotty winning. I think there should definitely be a rematch between these guys.
Clottey had 2 fight with a bad knee also. Clottey landed the sharper shots and busted Cotto's face up.
I'm really starting to favor some type of modified head gear to reduce the risk of head butt cuts. Seems like they are the worst cuts in boxing. My son told me the 4 oz. gloves used in MMA were introduced for the express purpose of cutting down on cuts. I think you could strip down the head gear amateurs use. Just enough in the right places to keep the head butts from causing damage. Let's face it, punches don't cause cuts to the forehead very often so it shouldn't be a big deal. The hands are already padded.
He deserved to get hit in the back of the head for locking Cotto's arm everything else was Clottey's attempts to have Mercante deduct Cotto a point.
I scored it EXACTLY as you did, for similar reasons. Can't really add much more than that. IMO, this was a close - but clear - win for Cotto, and was very surprised that there has been as much bitching about the decision as there has been.
7-5 Cotto. Clottey fights, like Wright fights sometimes are, can be difficult to score because of his guard. It's not easy to see exactly what gets through the guard and what he blocks. I've actually re-watched some parts of fights in slow-mo to see what gets through. Taylor got through Wright's guard more than I had originally thought (I still had Winky winning). I'll probably watch this one again.
