Regardless if you agreed with the descion, Cotto and Clottey fought a throw back fight last night.....Cotto, was able to change his boxing plan even after the headbutt that hindered his vision for most of the fight...Cotto showed how powerful his straight jab is by dropping Clottey..a tough man to drop....Clottey was able to take advantage of the lack of vision from Cotto on his left eye by pounding his with rights...Cotto sucked it up and was able to win the pre amp to the championship rounds as well as the two championship rounds.. Clottey fought bravely and very smart...typical fashion to the proud Ghanan tradition of fighters...but at the end Cotto was the class...he had fresher legs that allowed him to stick and box to win the championship rounds... This was a very tough test for Cotto, that is inline now for a rematch agains SSM.... In all honesty, for me the fight was closer to 115-112 Cotto than any of the other judges....scores
For me I had honestly had it 116 - 111 but the funny thing is I was in disagreement with that scoreline the 1st time I watched it but when I watched it 2 more times after that today I saw the major luls in Clotteys workrate and most of those rounds went to Cotto.
If you watch the fight several times, then you clearly identified that Cotto, stuck to his plan of boxing Clottey and push him to the corner when possible and trning around when he was moving fowward..Cotto..learn that from the Margo fight, in order not to fight on his heels and control the fight, incrasing leverage on his punches whcih he was never able to do against Margo... Clottey fought with heart and guts, but hsi skill level as a boxer was NOT at Cotto's level and that was the difference in the fight...but Clottey understood that his chance to win relayed on his ability to connect right hands ..after Cotto left eye vision was inpeeded by the huge gash from the head butt
Cotto fought 8 rounds and a half with one eye...if you never been cut in the right , a cut that inpeed your vison you dont understand how unerving that can be...Cotto kept his poise and box beautiful win on eye...
