He ran too much last night. Not that I blame him, Margarito was putting on a lot of pressure and maybe Cotto just felt that it was the only chance he had at winning. Although I picked Margarito I was hoping for a draw( I posted it before the fight) but honestly as the fight went along, the more Cotto ran the more I cheered for Margarito. Cotto ran more than DLH did against Trinidad(probably for the same reasons) and I'm disappointed he didn't stand his ground a bit more. Maybe the result would have been a faster victory(a la Cintron) for Margarito but at least Cotto would have gone out on his shield. Just my point of view! Don't turn this into a hate thread, just honest opinions from Cotto fans!
Well, the difference is Hoya ran against a non punching Trinidad so that he looked good while doing it (of course, up until the final three rounds) where Cotto got on his bike from the get go and was completely overwhelmed by MArg's high output. I think Cotto stood a better chance toe to toe against Marg than Hoya did against Trinidad because Trinidad was a much more lethal puncher. Cotto should have fought more on the inside and pushed Marg back. That's what got him there to begin with. When they did exchange Cotto would come out on top but then he'd get on the backfoot again. I don't know why he did what he did but if it wasn't working then why didn't his corner tell him to go in and just be Cotto. Maybe he let the talk of his being a "boxer" go to his head after Mosley fight.
I saw lots of great side to side movement. Hitting Margarito with power shots and moving out the way. It was working also until Margarito caught him on the ropes with right hands and uppercuts. It was a great gameplan by Cotto. He lost the fight when he rested against the ropes.
Cotto was skipping around way too much by the end of that fight. He was doing it to avoid Margo's relentless pressure though so I guess I can't blame him much for it.
He was running a lot at the end though. But that fight was already over. Margarito already had his heart.
I agree he ran a bit and I think that's why the scorecards were so close despite Cotto boxing Tony's head off most of the fight. He did throw lots of punches back though, but I think it's only fair to mention his dancing because a lot of Cotto fans said that he would make Margarito quit.

I was at the fight & it went pretty much like I thought it would! I knew Cotto would not stand up to Margitos none stop pressure. Sure Cotto was faster, but he could not hurt Margito especially when he was going backwards the whole fight! I hope Margito gets a rematch with P. Williams & kayos him!:-D
Cotto ran out of nescessity. Look what happened when Margarito caught up to him and started making contact. Cotto started getting busted up and hurt immediately. Cotto is not built for heavy incoming fire, certainly not for all out war. He was always extremely flimsy. It's not like he started backing up against Mosley, N'dou, Abdualaev and others for no reason. Cotto is extremely vulnerable during exchanges. You have to accept his need to move and "run" if you're going to accept him as a fighter. It's mandatory.
