Cotto fighting at 154 is a terrible idea. He should stay at 147 or retire.

Sorry, but why the hell is Miguel Cotto moving to 154?

He was outmuscled by the smaller Pacquiao at 145, he was bulldozed by Margarito at 147 (admittedly this may have been on account of cheating, but the fact remains that Cotto was unable to hurt Margo at all), and he hasn't looked stronger (in fact I'd argue he looked the physically weaker man) against the other top guys he has faced at 147 (Mosley and Clottey).

No-one can say Miguel has looked as powerful, strong or comfortable at 147 as he did at 140. OK, he eventually got too big for 140, but to now go up to 154? Give me a break, he is 5ft 7in and will be both outsized and outmuscled at lightmiddleweight.

Cotto is a far better all-round fighter than Yuri Foreman, but I wouldn't be surprised if Foreman beats him, because Cotto's frame just isn't big enough to be strong and comfortable at 154.

And guys like Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez would dominate and stop him IMO. I'd probably back Cory Spinks and Kermit Cintron to beat him up there as well.

Miguel can't hang with Pac or Floyd, and I doubt he'd cope with Shane these days either, but there are still good welters for him to fight - Andre Berto would be a title fight, Antonio Margarito would be a high-profile rematch, and he could always invite Ricky Hatton up for a big-money 'loser retires' clash at 147.

What do you guys think, am I right or is 154 a good move for Miguel?

    100% agreed.

I think Foreman will win a UD over Cotto.

It's just another way of Arum maximizing his "product" as he knows this one is nearing the end.

I second that. And even more a tall very fast and mobile guy who is on a roll and undefeated is even worse. I also couldn't see cotto beating
martinez or dzindziruk who are faster and as good a boxer as himself but bigger.

    Im not sure i agree,

I think Cotto UD's Foreman, although he lost a brutal fight to Pacquiao last time out i think he will want to bounce back and win it for his dad, i think he might be a bit of an animal in this fight and he is levels above Foreman imo

I know some think he will do good there, and i hope they are right.

For me, the reason im worried about Cotto is that i see this as pretty pointless.... and im not even talking about foreman, who really cares about foreman at this point... yes hes a solid solid fighter but hes merely a tune up in a new weight for cotto, the three names and rulers of the division are (the bigger picture once past foreman, and cottos future at this weight should he get PAST foreman)

    Williams
    Martinez
    dzindziruk

and to a lesser extent, if he gets back on track out of prison

    Kirkland

Those are some good guys regardless of ones size, and now your going to enter the ring the smaller man against them?

For a fighter like cotto who is short, compact, and relies on speed and skill to a degree... i just dont see how this move makes sense. His own words is he felt great at 145lbs.... and he weighed 146 for clottey.

Usually, a fighter moving up when he can comfortably make the weight he should be at is a sign of bad things IMO.

Now... maybe hes moving up because he feels hes done all he could at 147? I mean, the guys fought

    Mosley
    Pac
    Clottey
    Margarito
    Quintana
    Judah

Theres really only one or two fights left out there for him in the big scheme of things (berto, collazo) outside of rematches....

I am rooting Cotto on and i hope he can rule 154....

But i guess im just hoping this move up isnt due to him not wanting to make 147 anymore, his training camps have become routinely underwelming and im just hoping this isnt a sign of him not wanting to train down to 147.

i think he looks bad in this fight...he hasn't had stopping power in most of his last fights at 147, and moving up won't help...and foreman isn't anything special, but he can box

Cotto should get an easy nice tuneup, win a title off that IBF guy noone knows, and then unify with Berto. @ 147.

Foreman is a soft touch at 154 and I think Cotto can take him. Won't be easy though since he's small for the weight.

Then again, cotto said this (2010) is going to be his last year.... so maybe hes not looking at the bigger picture of if he can rule 154 or not, and just figures he will fight foreman for a title at 154, then fight a farewell fight and then ride off into the sunset a three weight champion, millionair, and a fan favorite. If thats the case then ill be happy with that.

He tried to bang with the toughest dudes out there, Margarito with a granite chin throwing over 100 punches a round and Pacquiao even faster and more active than Margarito with a great chin himself. What the hell is Foreman going to do to stop Cotto from walking him down? I agree Cotto is small for 154 but if you can't hurt him, he will not respect you. Cotto by tko/ko

Not a damned thing wrong with that kirk, and add to that one of the most humble selfless fighters we've had the pleasure of watching in the last 20 years.

Bob Arum is not going to allow him to fight anybody dangerous at 154. He will put him in with Foreman. He will win the water downed title, and he will get a shot at say a coming back De La Hoya, or a rematch against Margarito and Mosley. Arum knows what he is doing. The problem with Cotto is he become uncoachable. Fires his cornerman, his uncle, hires his buddy who doesn't help him at all. It will lead to more debacles in big fights.

I actually like the idea of Miguel Cotto moving up to 154lbs and taking on Yuri Foreman. Let's not forget what the general perceptions were prior to his fight with Santos, Yuri was seen as a little bit of a joke by a good amount of people. He certainly has skills, and he did a brilliant job against a less than stellar version of Santos, but I think he has his hands full against Miguel Cotto, who is both talented and experienced.

Miguel Cotto has tasted life at the top of the tree in Boxing. He's now had two deal with a couple of defeats, and the realisation that he is not, in any way shape or form, the best fighter at Welterweight. Boxing however has way outs, and I think for him to move up and fight a much less talented fighter than Pacquiao, a much less destructive puncher than Margarito, is just what Miguel needs right now. He hasn't got many fights left, why not establish himself as a three weight world champion against a credible opponent?

...It all boils down to how you view Yuri Foreman and Cotto's chances of beating him. ...I think Cotto can beat Foreman. He has no chance against Williams or Martinez, but Foreman is there for the taking in my judgment.

I thought Yuri looked pretty terrible against Santos even though he won. Santos whom I used to rate looked absolute crap.

But Cotto at 154? If Cotto had a better chin, I would be more confident. But how will he get inside on Foreman? This is an intriguing style matchup and I think will make for a good fight.
