Cotto fighting at 154 is a terrible idea. He should stay at 147 or retire.

Then how did you score it? Cotto was clearly the better man and things were only going to get more desperate for the man they call Yuri Foreman. He looked good at 154lbs, and I feel in hindsight, moving up to capture the WBA title was actually a good idea not a terrible one. He can now take confidence into his next fight, he's a three weight world champion, and who knows how far he can go. I'm not suggesting he stay at 154lbs...I never did suggest that.

I had Cotto ahead, but not 5-1. I wasn't scoring it, but I thought it was pretty competitive. I don't think Cotto looked superb, he looked good, but when you consider the calibre of Foreman, it was not a stellar performance, merely a good one.

I stand by what I said in post#1:

Perhaps from a career perspective, moving up to 154 and taking a belt from someone like Foreman will prove to be a shrewd move (despite the cynic's view that he has "cherrypicked" a belt from the division's easiest option), but I still think Cotto fighting at 154 is indeed a bad idea. A top lightmiddle would beat him badly IMO. I hope he goes back to ww now he's won a lmw strap.

I don't know, Cotto looked stronger to me at 147 than at 140. Cotto and Mosley were neck and neck it seemed in terms of strength. Clottey was stronger. I do not think Pacquiao was. Clottey said before that Cotto is stronger than Pacquiao, it's just that he fought Pacquiao like he could just run him over without getting hurt.

I don't think Cotto and Mosley looked in equal in terms of strength, I think Shane looked the stronger, but Cotto was doing the sharper, better boxing. And when Cotto hit Pacquiao, there was no visible effect. When Pacquiao hit Cotto, Cotto was hurt and Cotto retreated. Pacquiao sure looked the stronger man to me, despite being smaller.

Cotto's stock has risen. He's a three weight world champion who now has options at 154lbs and 147lbs. A job well done.

How could you give Foreman more than 1 round? Even that round was questionable. Cotto looked good, not great. He seemed back to the basic, technically. Jabbing well and using that left hand more, but physically he wasn't awe-inspiring. I don't think he had tons of snap on his punches. He just seemed heavy-handed as usual. He can do alright in 154. He'll lose to a Martinez and probably get overwhelmed by a Paul Williams but it means no different ending his career at this weight than 147. The depth these days isn't earth-shattering so he should be fine. It won't be his best weight, obviously.

Man Popkins, do you get into some kind of bad mood when you come to this thread or what?

Anyway, I was more impressed with Cotto last nite than you.

I do think he'd be competitive in a fight with Mayweather, but lose on points. Floyd's defense would be the difference(as usual).

I think he could beat Spinks and Angulo (who I think is very limited)

I have watched Floyd for sometime and what I have noticed is pressure fights eventually stop pressuring him. I think that Floyd must have more pop in his punches that we give him credit for. Shane respected Floyd punches more and didn't want to get hit.

He look good last night granted he was in there against foreman. I think he'll do fine at that weight class.

He already loss to pacquiao and mayweather just retired. He is better off at 154. So many good boxers he could fight there. PW-Martinez-Cintron-angulo etc

Cotto got beat at his own game, he tried to brawl with the ultimate brawler in Pacquiao, not necesarrily 'out muscled'. Recall Cotto picking Clottey up and throwing him to the ground? The guy is a beast.

One thing many people say is that Pacquiao picked Cotto's jab apart. Could that have to do with Cotto's balance? Yes. Could a great trainer in Steward find a way to keep Pacquiao on the other end of the jab all night? Possibly, I say Cotto fights a tune-up and go for another big fight.

The cynic would say that he cherrypicked a belt from the easiest possible option through his connection with Bob Arum, and lament that this is viewed as a positive thing in this day and age.

I would say that he doesn't have good options at 154, because he will lose to one of the top lightmiddles, not because he is an inferior fighter but because he is not a lightmiddle.

Had he fought Andre Berto at 147 instead of Foreman at 154, I firmly believe Cotto would have won, and would now own the most prestigious belt at the premiere weight class in boxing, and his stock would be considerably higher as Berto is a better fighter than Foreman is.
