Cotto gets shot at WW Title, doesn't have to fight Williams or Margo

i for one am glad to see Cotto getting this shot.

i say he wins this fight then takes on either Clottey or Berto winning either fight, to rematch Margo, avenging his loss thus giving us our undisputed welter weight champion.

Excactly, this gives him a KO win and a belt going into a rematch with Margo.

As for Williams...he is not a welterweight but p4p Cotto is the better boxer.

 

Actually, I heard that Williams wanted to keep the 147 belt but the WBO wouldn't allow it and made him give it up in order to get their #1 ranking at 154 to fight for the interim belt, which was essentially a title eliminator to be Dzindiruk's mandatory. The WBO blows.

 

I think williams moving to 154 is the best thing he could do. He isnt a welterweight and Williams vs Dizi for the WBO 154lb title is a good match.

 

Frankly, the WBO title isn't any worse than the other belts. You have the WBC with it's Champion Emeritus nonsense, the IBF, which let Judah keep his WW world title after losing to Baldomir in order to receive the large sanctioning fees for his fight with Mayweather, the WBA and their ongoing series of farcical rulings with regards to their exalted "Super Champion" status, the most recent being Margarito's elevation to Super Champ without even unifying two major titles so that they could leave him up to 18 months to rematch Cotto in order to bring them their sanctioning fees without being stripped.

All of the titles are ****ing bogus.

When has Cotto ever taken a title from anyone? The answer is never.

Don't forget either that Cotto did more damage to Margarito than ANY fighter has ever done to him. Margarito looked like he was hit by a small SUV when the fight was over. Williams barely made Margarito break a sweat. He pitty pattied him to a decision, avoiding Tony like the plague. So yes I agree with you, it was beautiful boxing on the part of Williams. You'll see what happens when they fight again.

As for Quintana, it took Williams a 2nd fight to finally best the slick Puerto Rican . Cotto only needed one fight to THOROUGHLY dominate him .... umm .. pretty impressive.

And finally, lets not forget, Williams wasn't suppose to loose that fight to Quintana, MAJOR upset ... Williams has no one to blame but himself for that lack luster performance. As I stated before, Williams is no where near as tough as Margarito. Tony messed up, he was TOO methodical started out very slow, by his own admission. He will not make the same mistake in a rematch.

So in conclusion, Cotto would destroy Williams with smart, brilliant boxing. He's got the perfect blue print from the first Williams/Quintana fight. Cotto's boxing ability is 100% better than Quintana and I hope for Paul Williams sake, that Cotto doesn't find the "body shot" rhythm ...

Yes, it does. To be the best, you have to beat the best. I don't want Cotto to be like Calzahge and not win a legit title until he's in his mid 30's.

 

Most of the greatest fights happen WITHOUT a title on the line. You don't have to fight someone with a belt, to fight the best.

Prime example, John Ruiz. He had a title, was he the best?

 

Of course it does matter. But beating the hell out of a good fighter like Quintana for the WBA belt, and defending it succesfully against top contenders like Judah and Mosley makes it a legit title.

 

Ya, the best way to determine a winner is to measure the fighters. Measuring tapes rule.
