I’m one of those who call the Miguel Cotto – Alfonso Gomez fight a mismatch. Mismatch it is because we have a very HOT WW, because Cotto fought Judah and Mosley last year and many former or later world champions for years and here he fights a TV Show star and on the main event with Cintron-Margarito as it’s UNDERCARD. How bad it is?

And how bad is Gomez as a legitimate contender in boxing? So-so. Now I’m gonna give you some facts to actually show that Alfonso can bring at least SOMETHING to the table.

-Alfonso Gomez is BIGGER than Cotto
Yep, he’s taller and has a longer reach. How’s that can be? He’s fought MIDDLEWEIGHTS in The Contender that’s how. And Manfredo has the same size as Jeff Lacy. Yep.

-Alfonso lost 2 fight in his early days and the 3rd at MW. Never been stopped
Yep, another fact. And the first two losses he suffered when he was 21 and 23. You could say that a loss is a loss, but Margaito also lost some fights early in his career. And the 3rd loss came from the hands of Manfredo in a MW clash after he defeated Manfredo in MW. And he doesn’t have a TKO loss in his record. As a matter of fact he’s got a pretty good chin.

-His record is not a protected one
He fought prospects Smith in his 2nd fight, Feliciano in his 4th. Competed in a MW boxing series. Defeated prospect Kaddour, Manfredo and tricky veteran Tackie.

    -Gomez has power
He’s not a puncher but I dare to say that on the same night Malignaggi would’ve defeated Gatti only on points. Gomez not only made McGirt stop it (that’s what McGirt did in the Mayweather fight) but he knocked the over the hill war veteran out brutally. That was a cracking blow. As he became older and returned to WW he became stronger.

    -Gomez has skills
Not a world beater and doesn’t match Cotto’s but not bad at all. Manny Steward likes to recognize it. Decent jab, good on the inside, good fighting skills. Nothing great but a good pack altogether.

    -Great punch output
Against Tackie, in 10 rounds he threw more punches than the brave Malignaggi or Mosley in 12. 917 to be precise. More punches per round than Calzaghe. 32% landed. That’s impressive.

-Gomez willing to trade, has big balls
It didn’t take long for the public to become his fans. He’s a fan friendly fighter who doesn’t afraid of big challenges, who’s record and experience brought him to the top15 contender level with hard fights and some losses as a learning experience. (Cintron never lost a battle before he met Margarito but he had to deal with a different situation there because he was protected until then.) He will make a GREAT fight with Cotto, will give his best, his heart and everything. Nobody believes that he can pull it off but he will do everything and at worst he’ll loose another fight and win a few more million fans. Not bad…

Some innocent points here. Don’t want to legitimize him, because I couldn’t. It’s just some facts.

    Care to comment?

Hopefully Cotto will take him seriously, unlike he did with the Urkal fight.

Just a fight to make Cotto look good, I cant see anything in what Gomez does which is a threat to a talent like Cotto, I expect a 5-6 rouond KO.

I see what the promoters are doing though as they have Cintron - margarito on the undercard, a fight between the winners is a must!

That's a good point. I've only tried to refer to the clean KO. No 'external' help needed. Seems like that was your biggest problem with my post. Agree with the rest?

gomez is definitely no slouch. with better training and management he would have probably had a notable career. he may give cotto a good couple of rounds before getting ko'd by his body work.

Why do so many people say that this is a ''step back''. Then I guess DLH, Hopkins, Leonard, etc etc etc etc took many steps back. His last few opponents were quite tough so let him have a break/tune up.
Nobody all the time fights top fighters, unless they are fighting once a year.

BTW Gomez isn't that bad at all, comparing him to opponents DLH, Hopkins, Calzaghe faced in between big fights he's quite good actually.

IMO this will be great fight Gomez is no push over and more confedent than ever. I dont see Cotto taking Gomez lightly I think will be a real war while it lasts . Can Gomez beat Cotto ? I dont think so but the boy has heart and imo it would be foolish to call him an easy fight

I like Gomez, and give him a chance against Cotto, mainly because of his toughness. It should bne a good fight, while it lasts. If Gomez can manage to hurt Cotto, he better put him away though, most definitely.
