who do do you think he should have gone for? he had a choice between steward, mcgirt, cuellar and shields.
This is what i was thinking, Steward works great with certain fighters he might have seen something he can get out of Cotto but imo this will be a relationship like Taylors with Cotto going back to his old style in the ring.
Great! I only wish it happened 2 or 3 years before the huge losses. Cotto got to a certain level with his solid boxing skills and physical gifts but things never got fine-tuned to be honest, a fine-tuner was missing such as Manny. Still, there's time and Cotto has what Steward really likes: solid boxing fundamentals, patience, ring smarts and a powerful jab, people don't realize what a great match this is. Now whether personalities will click as well is another question but I think Cotto is a good student. Much at stake for Cotto, and a very good time to make the move!
If you've listened closely to Manny commentating on Cotto's fights over the years, he's wanted this very badly. He obviously saw so much more he could get out of Miguel. Good for both of them. Perhaps this will rejuvenate Cotto's career... I wish him luck.:good
This is a good move. Cotto never has had a game plan in a fight. Hope Cotto can go out a high note. However, I still think fighting at 154 is not smart
Have steward in his corner is a big plus because now he gone teach him better defense i seen alot cotto fights and that was one thing he was missing
He had a choice between anyone he wanted. Those were just his finalists. I've been saying for a long, long time now that he should hook up with Manny Siaca. Of those four though, Cuellar would have been the best choice by a long shot. He specializes in controlled aggression and subtle movements to keep an opponent off balance. Steward specializes in....getting fighters to fight tall, which won't help Cotto a lick when he fights someone 4 - 5 inches taller than him in a couple months. Plus, other than Klitschko, who has Steward actually worked any magic for lately? He made Taylor worse. Cintron is obviously doing much better now with Shields. Andy Lee looks like a bust. I don't get why Shields and McGirt are even high profile trainers. When I think of great trainers, they're pretty far down the list. Shields has had some mixed success, but he's not the greatest strategist, and Cotto will need a good strategy for this fight.
Cotto needs to have a specific gameplan with his fighting style especially against a mobile tall outside boxer like Foreman. Steward should have been hired for the Pac fight very good move. Might save his career.
