Cotto: "I get more money against Margarito than Martinez"

Why doesn't Martinez call out Antonio Margarito???

 

Wondered the same thing myself.

Margarito would be one of Martinez's biggest paydays at around that weight and the fight would be interesting based on their history!

 

Could it be that he's scared???? Cuz he never ever mentioned Margarito.

 

Martinez said he wanted to fight Margarito and avenge his defeat after he first won the middleweight title, but after the Pacquiao fight he said he didn't care to make that match because Margarito could be seriously hurt. Recently though he's once again said that if Margarito beats Cotto that he'd be interested.

 

He shoul fight Margarito before calling out Cotto, It's a more signifcant fight for him. Do you have any links that shows Sergio stating this cuz I never found any.

 

IMO it's just a case of Martinez keeping his eye on the top prize(Pac or Mayweather). A rematch with Margarito would have increased his profile and solidified his fanbase.

 

I disagree that Martinez should want Margarito first; Margarito hasn't won a significant fight in years, and avenging his defeat at a higher weight doesn't really mean a great deal after 10 years have passed. Anyway here are some links:

Thanks for the links:thumbsup I believe that Sergio should handle old business before heading on to new stuff, Besides beating Margarito will be a good Build up fight for him businesswise if he wants Cotto. Margarito's stock hasn't gone down that much due his losses because it was against to opposition, Pac and Mosley. Margarito is still one of the top dogs in the welterweight and Jr. middleweight range. U gotta work ur way up.

 

It was 10 years ago. Margarito isn't really seen as a top dog at all IMO; he can no longer make 147 and has done absolutely nothing at 154. Do you really think over the last six months that Martinez should have been calling out Margarito, who looked like he might never fight again after Pacquiao, ahead of Cotto, who's a beltholder and still actually relevant in a P4P sense?

 

exactly ... martinez needs to fight bigger man before trying to knock at the cash cows of his category like pac and cotto because i honestly think he would crush them both BUT they are not there yet he needs to earn it. this type of reasoning is like saying gamboa deserves a fight with JMM..

martinez fought williams (which lost to quintana regardless of the rematch haha) and kermit cintron who is a joke and pavlik is the only semi respectable fight ill give him he needs a better resume still

No we wouldn't. This is a fight in his own weight class where he's trying to avenge a loss. It has nothing to do with Floyd and nothing to do with Sexy Sissy Sergio and his struggles to find a midget to fight.

Floyd would never take a fight like this to begin with.

 

Same story with Roy Jones and Hopkins, but Roy didn't Ko Hopkins, Margarito Ko'd Martinez. A margarito fight can't really hurt Sergio's Resume at all, We all know Margarito always takes too much damn punishment but he keeps on going and going and going, it's not like he was getting beat up because of decline in ability he was chopped up to pieces by Pacquiao, EVERYBODY GETS CHOPPED UP TO PIECES BY PACQUIAO. Even Miguel Cotto had it done to him, and he came back and is a champ at 154. Sergio needs to pay his dues man, only notable names on his resume are Paul Williams and Pavlik.

 

Pay his dues?atsch He tried to get the fight as soon as he won the middleweight belt, but Bob wanted to make the Pacquiao-Margarito fight. Ever since that fight, no one actually knew whether Margarito would fight again, and the second he was cleared they immediately made the Cotto rematch. And no, not everyone who fights Pacquiao sustains the kind of career-threatening eye damage that Margarito received; I think there's a very good chance that Cotto-Margarito gets ruined in a manner similar to Vazquez-Marquez IV.

If Cotto wins the rematch, do you seriously think Martinez should still "pay his dues" and give Margarit a third straight post-suspension title fight? It will have been 3+ years since he will have won a single meaningful fight.

 

i dont think it would be a bad fight for sergio to fight marg vs cotto loser because they are both arguably big names for him plus marg already beat him once... so if cotto were to "destroy" marg its even less reason for sergio to fight cotto since theres a triangle thats going to need cleaned up first and if cotto loses well it would be a chance for cotto and sergio.
