(G. Oquendo) Translated from Google Translate with a few edits/additions: (BOXING) According to reports, there is a chance that Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May of next year in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to reports, Cotto will meet Mayweather at the WBC's annual convention (which is going on from December 11-17, 2011 in Las Vegas) and Team Mayweather was previously very interested in a fight with Cotto. If realized, this fight could take place at a catchweight from 150 to 152 lbs. It had been said that Floyd was looking for a fight with Pacquiao at this time, but it now seems Pacquiao will face Juan Manuel Marquez possibly in May 2012. The winner of Cotto-Mayweather could face Pacquiao in September or October 2012. Something that could be an "issue" (to prevent a Mayweather-Cotto fight from happening) is that Cotto wants to make history in becoming the first Puerto Rican to win titles in 4 different divisions (and fighting Floyd would not help Cotto achieve this dream, as Cotto would have to face a 160 pounder to win another belt in a different division). (G. Oquendo)
I am against anything other than Mayweather/Pacquiao, but a Cotto fight would shut up the haters that said Floyd was ducking Cotto, especially now that he is looking good again. Cotto at 154 would also segway nicely into a Mayweather/Martinez fight.
If it said, " el proximo mayo", but it says, " el proximo mes de mayo". well anyways... I'm sure Cotto would be more than happy to have a chance to make some serious money and take on Mayweather. I just doubt May will go for it. If I were Cotto I would go to 160 and take Chavez jr. Belt and make history and money of course it will be billed as another Mex vs PR fight. Then drop back down and challenge Canelo, another great Mex vs Pr fight. Cotto will make good Money and has a chance at defining his legacy by taking two undefeated Mexican's "0".:good
It's a double edged sword, I really like Cotto, so I want to see him get that huge payday. But I also don't want to see him take a one sided beating again.
Cotto is looking better right now than pac or khan, and if its at 154 i think he has the better chance than pac or khan
I'd love to see this fight. Miguel deserves another shot on the really big stage. I don't feel he did himself justice against Pacquiao. If he's beaten fair and square by Mayweather he could still retire reasonably happy with his career, if he chooses to do so.
I'm totally cool with this fight, but I realize that Cotto is promoted by Arum (I think), so I'm not sure if this fight will happen.
I recall Cotto saying he only wants the really big fights now at this stage in his career. He'd love a chance to fight Mayweather, I'm sure. Promoter problems are sure to be an issue, though, if they do, in fact, begin to negotiate.
