People have a tendency to not understand the difference between popularity of opponents and quality of opponents.

WW and LWW were more popular divisions at the time when Cotto fought there and his opponents had more name recognition and fame, therefore because people knew them very well it seemed very impressive when Cotto beat alot of these Names however if you pit Martinez against anyone who Cotto fought at those weights he would handle and KO the majority of them with ease.

Cotto has a huge PR fan base who have been willing to overlook how weak he's historically been against A level opponents and his struggles against B level opponents.

Cotto was destroyed by Pacquiao had 2 competitive rounds.
Cotto did better than many against Floyd, but lost more decisively than Maidana.
He was Beaten by Tony once and the 2nd fight was going the same way at the time of the lucky stoppage.
Trout humiliated Cotto and busted his face up with his featherfists.

Now on to who he beat.
Mayorga was beating Cotto up and broke his hand causing a stoppage.
Mosley was very close I had Shane winning.
Clottey was very close it could have been a draw.
Foreman hurt his leg who knows how close it would have been.
Judah stunned him in 1st round and was weaked by many lowblows.
Paulie lost but was a very competitive fight, Cotto couldn't stop him but Hatton and Khan did.

Martinez would Probably KO all of them and outbox Margarito if he had a second shot at him, Sergio improved vastly since he was a little green kid 14 years ago. He'd been boxing 2 or 3 years at the time, Margarito started at 8.

However Martinez has fought good competition who no one knows because the middleweight division hasn't been as popular lately. They were not well known which doesn't mean they aren't quality.

Think had Golovkin came here with no fanfare or hype and Sergio beat him they would say oh look Sergio beats another Euro-Bum, But the reality is Cotto would lose to all easily that Martinez has beat.

Chavez would destroyed MC with ease as would Rubio Vera Zbik and maybe even Lee.
Williams lost to Quintana But KO'd him 1st Rd of 2nd Fight. Cotto would not stand close to a chance with Williams.
Pavlik beat Taylor in 7 it took Froch 12, Hopkins lost to him twice. Does anyone really think Cotto could beat them.
Macklin and Murray beat Sturm but were robbed the same way Sturm was when he should have beaten De La Hoya. Yes Martinez outpointed Murray even when badly injured and won,though it was close.
Dzinziruk dominated Konecny who made Quillen look really bad all three would beat Cotto.

Cotto can barely beat JMW there is not one MW he could beat. So no its not a Step Up For Maravilla.
