Cotto doesn't have that "dog" in him the way guys like Morales, Pryor, and Arguello did where they'd say **** it and go toe to toe if need be, willing to accept a brutal loss if it came after giving it every last ounce of energy in their body. Cotto is willing to take punishment and has taken some bad beatings, but he’s also the kind of fighter who seems to think a lot about his future and will try to preserve himself as best as possible (where his ultimate goal is running out the clock)…even in the midst of taking punishment. He has real toughness (and DID conduct himself like a warrior vs Torres imo), but a warrior in the TRUEST sense of the word, as in amongst the very toughest ever? Nah… mc’s still a fighter I enjoy watching though and hes done his part in making meaningful fights we want to see. boxings not an easy sport and it certainly hasnt been easy for him. it is what it is.
Well, you're either coming forward or your backing up. Cotto coming forward would have = suicide. He had no choice but to back up in order to keep from getting KO'd. Some fighters like Oscar and Floyd fight better backing up, Cotto doesn't, but he had no choice on this night.
Or just really stupid. If you want to consider that being a "Warrior," which is fine, they're extremely rare in this world.
When has Evander Holyfield ever backed up? That guy is the definition of a "warrior". A guy who, at the moment of truth, feels the need to prove himself to the man standing in front of him and won't give an inch. He would rather get KOed than give his opponent that satisfaction. Cotto doesn't fit that bill. As stated before, anyone who steps in that ring is a "warrior" to some extent but i don't consider Cotto a "warrior" in the truest sense of the word. I think he used to be but not quite as much.
Great post. If you want to say every boxer is a warrior, that's fine. However, it makes no sense to signal Cotto out as a warrior based on his performance on Saturday. He did not display a warrior's mentality. And the people who are whining and crying like little girls because people aren't accepting this bull**** about Cotto being a warrior, are the same posters who have no problem belittling and degrading any fighter that they don't dick ride. Is Cotto a good fighter? Yes. Is he exciting? Yes. Has he fought some tough fights lately? Yes. Does he fight in the manner that is befitting of the warrior label? No. Warriors fight harder in the face of adversity. In the face of adversity, Cotto runs and/or fights dirty.
Huge, well said. Manny Pacquiao laid out in direct terms at post fight this weekend how important that is, specifically. He broke Cotto with that. Nice insight, K22.
Cotto doesn't have the punch resistance to be a warrior put simply. He has balls though, steps in the ring with anyone and he certainly wasn't afraid to mix it up early, even after being dumped on the canvas. Later in the fight he had been punched into submission and was in panic survival mode. Your a ****, to be frank, and you are exaggerating things by stating it that way. He backs up in the face of a horrible beating, and threw one low blow when he wasn't even hurt particularly badly. Cotto has heart, but rarely is a guy who can't take a punch very well ever going to be a stereotypical warrior.
At least Cotto has the nutsack to get in the ring with the best fighters, unlike chicken Floyd:smoke..
Name me some fights where Cotto got into trouble and didn't resort to running and/or fouling his opponent. I don't even know why you're resorting to name calling here, you agree with me. Anyway, if you're going to call me names, at least back it up. Prove me wrong.
dunno if this has anything to do with this topic but Cotto always back pedals. well at least in fights ive seen him in. if hes winning, losing or drawing, hes always pretty much doing that.
