I see the point some of you make. I think people applaud Cotto for his effort cause he stood in there and took the punishment from Pacquiao without qutting, although from round 5 or 6 on he knew inside he couldn't win. Don't forget that although he was backing up, he still got punished several times from Pacquiao. And I'm sure his corner wanted to stop the fight, but he didn't let them to. But he tired to overpower Pac and it didn't work, he tried to exchange and got hurt repeatedly, those things got him to survival mode in the last rounds. Sure, he danced away, but as I said he chose to stay in there and finish the fight although it was clear to him that he cound't win it. That's all I'm saying, nothing more nothing less.
Not only that, but Hoya ran because he thought he had the fight in the bag. He was trying to sit on a lead. Cotto was well behind Pac. He bascially stopped trying to win. I've seen Cotto fans kill Mayweather for being a runner. However, Floyd is still undefeated. If he's running, it's helping him to win. Cotto ran has truned into a track star lately. In two of his recent fights, he ran when he was behind and still got stopped.
So now where giving guys props for not quitting? I thought you weren't supposed to quit? If we decide to applaud fighters for not quitting, then shouldn't criticize fighters for quitting. Cotto was well behind and decided to run away to try to avoid being stopped. He wasn't trying to win. I'm not about to applaud that.
True. Personally, however, I've never done that. I have only criticized him for the selections of his opponents, not for his fighting style.
Sometimes qutting is the logical and smart thing to do. But I'm sure you didn't start watching boxing yesterday, how many times have you seen people accuse fighters for being "quitters"? When a fighter is in deep **** in a fight, it's obvious he can't win and he doesn't quit, it's definitely a positive thing for him. Sure, he could have tried to bang with Pac, but he had already tried that several times in the previous rounds and it didn't work. I mean, you would obviously prefer him to try to go for the knockout, but you know as well as I do that he would never get it. For me, it wouldn't be "trying to win" if he did that, it would be more like commiting suicide.
When will people realize even the toughest SOB out there will eventually quit. Whether it's by saying "no mas" and quitting on their stool, or running away from another fighter during a match where they've been beaten up bad, it happens to the best of them and by no way should be discredited because they didn't want to fuking die in the ring. They have family, children, a life outside of fighting.
I've been watching boxing for about 20 years; since I was a little kid. Very rarely have I seen a fighter run away like that when he's clearly behind. You're basically saying that when a fighter is well behind on the cards, he should just pack it in. In boxing, the fight can end on one punch. Technically, it's never over until it's over. Fighters should keep trying to win until it's over.
Roberto Duran, Gernaro Hernadez, Chavez, De La Hoya.. etc. May have not have happened to them all but it does happen to even the best of them. Better to live to fight another day.
STrange that you criticize Cotto of all this when your hero is Mayweather..... BTW, what the hell did u TRY to say in your second to last sentence?? that sentence pretty much sums up all of ur comments... senseless.... u go, brave "keyboard warrior." :smooch
No. I'm saying that I understand why he chose to fight that way. As you've seen I never said that I entirely disagree with you in this thread. I guess the guy didn't want to get knocked out for the second time. To be honest with you, when he started backpedalling, I thought that he did it to avoid major damage for a few rounds and regain his composure, so that he would let it all out in the last couple of rounds. But I guess survival and the greatness and ability of Pacquiao as a fighter prevented that.
I fixed the last sentence. I changed up what I was going to say, and left a word in there by mistake. Anyway, I can't remember the last time Mayweather ran like Cotto did last night. And again, if you're running to help yourself win, that's at least understandable. Cotto ran not to win, but to avoid getting knocked out. That's a huge difference. I'll forgive your ignorance though. I know you're hurting after that loss. I'm honestly not trying to rub it in anyone's face. I'm generally perplexed as to why people are trying to praise a guy for giving up on winning and running away to avoid a stoppage. It makes no sense. Look how Dawson got all that **** for supposedly running against Johnson. However, he totally controlled that fight and won pretty much every round. Now, people are turning around and praising Cotto for running around with a chicken with his head cutoff simply to avoid getting stopped. The guy basically quit, again.
