Cotto has only lost against the best with the exception of margarito and trout.... But to be fair he shouldn't be anywhere near the middleweight division as he's too small for it.... He has a short compact frame as trout was a tall boxer with good reach and we all know what happened against margacheato... But the two top p4p fighters he gave them both hell( even though a juiced up pacquiao sparked him out) and he gave Mayweather a hell of a fight. He fought Sergio for legacy. He knew Martinez was on his way out but how many of our favorite boxers have done the same thing? Wait for someone to be past it until they challenge them. I just think he gets a lot of **** for someone who has given us great exciting fights all throughout his career... And tbh I think the only cherry picks he's really had was yuri foreman and Sergio Martinez
But that was Sergio's fault more than anybody he went into the fight knowing he wasn't 100%... But it's ok for pacquiao to do the same??? They both had "injuries" going into the their biggest fight, both stated they were ok to fight ahead of said fight, So now the question of why both Mayweather and cotto get $hit arises bc there opponents were " medically cleared" and "fit" to fight...who are the real culprits here? Fighters who don't disclose their injuries? Or fighters who take advantage of their opponents injury or weakness
I like Cotto and think he is an excellent fighter, but I can see how one could say that he is overrated, while at the same time seeing an argument for him being underrated. How could he be overrated, well, look at his title runs. He is a four-division champion, but look who he beat to get there: a vacant belt at 140 against Pinto; a vacant title at 147 against Quintana; a vacant strap against Jennings at 147; a 154-pound championship against Foreman; and a middleweight title against Martinez. Most of his defenses aren't all that special either and he has never really been "the man" in any weight class that he has traversed, and he has lost to the very best that he has fought. On the flip side, he has been competitive versus the two best fighters of his generation and wins over Mosley, Clottey, Malignaggi, Judah, Malignaggi, Margarito, etc., make for a solid resume. Also, I think his skill is undeniable. Very good boxer/puncher.
Good post and I agree with u...I'm not saying cotto is a boxing god but should be respected for what he has done...he def a 1st ballot HOF and should, arguably be given the same pass as pacquiao and Mayweather have been given...not that any pass given is right but he is one of the top 3 ppv attractions and has paid his dues
Only guys on here are butt hurt that he won't make Gennady more famous and rich. He'll do it if he feels like it. Gennady should focus on his aluminum business at the s c r a p yard called K2 Promotions. Cotto has fought the best and deserves to pick and chose who he feels is worth of his ring presence.
good points... I think the hate just stems from him not fighting Sergio in his prime or fighting a disabled Sergio, or that he didn't try golovkin from the beginning
I appreciate it. And yes, Cotto will certainly be a HOF inductee. His status as one of the best Puerto Rican fighters ever cements it.
His best win...by a LANDSLIDE is 36 y/o Mosley who went 3-4-1 since that fight and was BLOWN out in all those losses. Some want to give Cotto credit for the Martinez fight but it is an undisputed fact that the guy can't even walk normally, let alone box. People act like he beat the 2009 Martinez. He is overrated. Canelo may have walked away from the table in their negotiations...but it WASN'T because he didn't want it.
Cotto HOF resume > ggg wack, hasnt fought anyone going on age 34 never took a risk fight or moved up in weight for another belt, bum resume.
