His contract ended with the Margarito fight which is why Arum was so hard trying to dangle the Pacquiao carrot at him so he could keep him but Pac wouldnt go above 147 so Cotto wouldnt take it. He also through Chavez at him but Cotto probably felt thats too high risk, low reward when he can make big money with Floyd or Canelo.

Cotto's team came out a couple of weeks ago and said that they are in a great position that a fighter rarely ever gets. They said that Cotto is the only boxer in the world other than Floyd & Pac that doesnt need a promoter or a contract anymore. They can stay a FA and sign each fight indvidually.

Cotto was going to the highese bidder, unless weight was a factor. Pac probably offered a lil more money, espically since Arum was trying to keep him but Floyd offered close money and 154.
