Oh and I agree with JR. When Clottey got backed up in the corner he got hit a lot. This is the reason why I think most people think Clottey hurt Cotto more (he probably did but...) When Cotto got hit he was usually moving his head sideways and it looked bad cause his guard wasn't up like Clotteys so you could see it clearly. When Clottey got hit in the corners, his guard was up and head against the ringpost. It didn't look as bad. But he certainly got hit in the corners, guard up, but the punches were getting there.
Not literally quit but looked to soften up a bit and panicked, that's normal though after a serious cut like and he still fought through it so that goes out the window. Still the signs in this fight aren't good enough for him in the future but we'll see.
Gatekeeper isn't an insult, maybe it sounds like an insult to you but not to me. It's a fighter who tests you well enough before you hit the championship level. The type of fighter you need to struggle with, look bad but beat to make it to the championship fights. A guy who lacks stamina is a guy who will test you for as long as his tank lasts. Let's a say a fighter who will give you glimpses of hell for a good few rounds at most then slowly fade. I never said he will come out a different fighter nor did I expect him to show up fighting like Pernell Whitaker. All I'm saying is defense needs to be looked into especially the vulnerability to uppercuts, that would haunt him real bad later against someone that will constantly throw and throw like Margarito. I've said this since the Torres fight that Cotto CAN'T handle pressure well enough and it turned out to be true but that CAN be improved if he doesn't kneel downwards like that. He has heart though no one can take that away from him, he's there to stay and will only drop if you MAKE him, as in beat the living HELL out of him. He's a world class fighter but still the recipe to beat him is available, just takes the right opponent.
Cotto is falling in love too much with that boxing of his, which isn't top notch in the 1st place. I pointed it out before the fight and I still stand by my opinion that Clottey doesn't fight well when being backed up and Cotto should've been pressing him the entire time. He did have Clottey backed up a few times and let him off the hook and went back to boxing and moving around. Not good strategy on Cotto's part. Although he did adjust well by the end of the fight.
My point is it's pretty simple man, if it hasn't been fixed yet..it won't ever be fixed. That's just something he's going to have to deal with. And the recipe to beat him is there but I can only think of two people in the WW division who can use said recipe. He already beat one of them and already lost to one of them.
Honestly, I don't think the blood bothered cotto as much as the gob of vaseline over the cut. I'm pretty sure that irritated his eye, between rounds you see his eye all red. I think the fight was a really close decision in favor of cotto, but a rematch should happen. Clottey fought one hell of a fight, but I think in a rematch with no headbutts or dirty tactics cotto takes it more convincingly.
great win by cotto. He did fight with one eye as it was clearly bothering him. I dont agree with the scorecards the fight could had gone either way. i thought he needed the last 2 rounds which he got in my scorecard. Great fight.
Aggression can be applied by any fighter if they train well enough to do it, it's not a complete style change and it can't be applied 110% like let's say someone like Margarito who made a career doing it but it can be applied in like 1 minute of each round for a good few rounds. Mosley didn't use it with Cotto but used it with Margarito, that's how they apply different styles in different situations. Don't get me wrong, he's hard to beat but still very possible, Clottey came close to doing it tonight and this is Clottey's second major fight since Margarito. As far as the defensive thing is concerned, he can try to improve it though I would say you're right that he might have to live with it as it doesn't seem likely any improvements will be made.
I had Cotto winning, but the fight would have been much easier if Clottey had not headbutted him, the cut caused Cotto to be somewhat blind in one eye, yet he did not complain, Clottey complained a lot, he needs an acting teacher.
It was a good fight. It gives new respect to guys like Frazier and Greb who only had one good eye their whole careers.
