Cotto-Marg - the size difference!!!

Tszyu was a good boxer but excellent? Come on. He had issues fighting off the backfoot. He pretty much relied solely on his right hand to set up the left hook. He also did not utilize footwork throughout much of his career. He was also not hard to find because he was always squared up for the big punch.

Good boxer with great power.

 

His Footwork is still developing? WTF are you talking about? Its developed....or did you not see the Mosely fight? His foot work is one of his best assets. Its pretty god dam good IMO.

 

Going to a corner and waiting on Mosley is good footwork? I don't think so.

 

In what way is Marg on the same level as Cotto when it comes to skills. The only thing that Marg has a clear cut advantage over Cotto on is his chin.

You cant tell me Cotto isnt far superior to margarito when it comes to the following...
speed, ring generalship/footwork, punch accuracy/efficiency (basically he doesnt waste punches), ring smarts (ability to go to plan B), counterpunching.

To a lesser extent, Cotto's defense is probably a little better.

Again, I dont think Marg is a scrub, but he is far from great. What makes him nearly part of the elite class is simply his chin and determination b/c on skills alone, he is probably at best B-.

 

when people say Cotto has good footwork, they are referring to the fact that when he fought Paulie, Zab, & Shane, everyone expected him to lose b/c he was supposedly some flatfooted stalker who would endlessly chase them around the ring with little to no success.

each time he is in the ring with an opponent who is faster on their feet and is suppose to have the advantage b/c they can stick and move, he always has shown he can use his SUPERIOR FOOTWORK to cut off the ring. Against Mosley, he used his footwork to completely outbox mosley and put himself in the best positions to counter shane all night.

 

He is a better boxer when it comes to placement of punches and his efficiency. But as I have mentioned before there is a method behind Tony's madness. His punch volume ensures that whatever difference there is in skill will be marginalized. Cotto will be forced to throw more punches and will in that way miss more and be more vunerable. That's the beauty of a swarmer with an iron chin. He forces you into his fight with little repercussion.

Margarito has shown a terrific defense when he needed to. Notably against Cintron in the first fight. I think the second fight Tony felt more comfortable taking Cintron's punches so he wasn't as concerned as the first fight. But in that first fight he showed a very tight, responsible guard and he showed that he could control the distance and pace of the fight by limiting Cintron's opportunities.

I'm not trying to split hairs with you here but Cotto did not completely outbox Mosley. They both had their moments. But this stepping in and stepping out of range will be much more difficult against a longer opponent. Shane is roughly the same size so it's a little easier to pop pop and step back.

Both Cotto and Margarito know how to catch opponents that run from them. But it seems Margarito gets no credit here for this. Williams was caught with big punches all night. It just seems like everyone conveniently overlooked that.

You know nothing about boxing calling Tszyu "good" at boxing. He was one of the best ever. PERIOD.

Margarito has beaten Cintron. Big deal.

 

Cotto deserves high props indeed. Guy's level of opposition get better and better.

 

I tend to agree with this. The size and power of Margarito will be too much for Cotto. I think he'll last to the later rounds, but I think a lot of people will be surprised when Margarito knocks him the f*ck out.:yep
