They really need to bring down the prices. A lot of the cards are not ppv worthy: Canelo/Lara, Cotto/Martinez, Pacquiao/Rios, and Mayweather/Maidana. At least if they do make these sh!t fights, bring down the price to $20/$30 or something. $60 is asking too much, especially, when the undercards are straight terrible. If they lower their prices, they'd see more people buying PPVs. Plus, every fucing fight has to be PPV lately. Like Chavez Jr./Golovkin was supposed to be PPV, and I honestly can't see a reason why it should be on PPV.
Arum said thanks to a strong gate that the promotion did make a small profit, don't know what small profit means to Arum though.
Definitely too many ppvs happening this year and that has to take a toll on the buy rates. I think Cotto-Martinez was the fourth straight month with a ppv in it. Higher prices hurt as well but I think there are simply too many to begin with. Especially when people are already paying a monthly subscription for HBO and/or Showtime to start with. The undercard didn't have any fighters with any name value to help out either. I think this looks like a bad sign for next months(5 straight months of ppvs) Alvarez-Lara card. I wouldn't be counting on Alvarez-Angulo like numbers for that card if I were anyone involved.
ppv have to be this high because of cable distributers taking half. the ppv model is in transition. soon you will see ppvs cost half as much once streaming model gets going (think wwe network). you just need more cord cutters. hbo go is already preparing for the transition. also people might argue with low ppvs this thing should be on premium tv. unfortunately, the receipts suggest top rank broke at least even and martinez/cotto still made more money than they would have on hbo...at least in sergio's case... around 3x more. so you will see more ppvs with smallish buys (think ufc currently) because its still most profitable route for the fighter. Hbo takes a cut and isn't at risk. in the future, you are seeing the slow and ultimate transition to online. whether it be hbo go or top rank live...this will be the future. duboef has already prepared for it as well as hershman.
Damn, that's a low number. Goes to show what we think are fights to be made as boxing fans is not necessarily what people will pay to see. I expected this to be around Floyd-Maidana numbers. I wonder what Floyd v Pac numbers would be. I have a feeling with dismal returns lately, it would probably do about 1.5-1.8M not the 2+M that Canelo-Mayweather did.
That would do great numbers that night but i doubt it would have any long term effect on interest in boxing. Could be wrong though.
Not Manny, Lou DiBella Like you pointed out, overall the promotion should have been in the black. The live gate was actually about 4.5m IIRC plus any foreign TV sales. MGP, LDB and TR all probably getting a piece of that - TR getting the biggest part and having the biggest expenses. Plus cuts for their fighters. Unsure of exact splits, but its probably a safe conjecture that they get some part of gate and other streams. TR was apparently also selling a direct stream, which I found interesting. Probably not huge numbers there but something.
Yeah, I am already predicting very low numbers for that fight. Lara/Alvarez should not be a ppv fight. No point, no reason at all for it. I'll be surprised if it does 200k at this point. I was honestly expecting higher numbers for Cotto/Martinez. I doubt Alvarez/Lara does any better. I just can't see it, honestly. I think people are getting tired of buying PPV fights. There have been too many, and Mayweather still has his, supposedly, in September and Pacquiao in November.
PPV has been laughable the last few years. Alvarez vs. Mayweather, sure. Pacquiao/Mayweather vs. Cotto, sure. Froch vs. Groves, sure. Other than that I can't think of any that deserved to be PPV. I see basically 3 classes of PPV fighters: Mayweather and Pacquiao will always be PPV and sell, though they both do better when they fight another star fighter. Alvarez and Cotto are B-level PPV fighters. They NEED another big name to sell. Ward, GGG, and Chavez Jr. are C-level PPV fighters and shouldn't be carrying PPV at all. Bottom line: I watch boxing religiously, but if you want me to pay for a card it better be under $50, have an absolutely stacked undercard, and feature matchups around 2-1 odds or less. The only fights I would consider paying for are: Kovalev vs. Hopkins or Stevenson (to unify the division) Ward vs. Unified Light Heavyweight Champion Ward vs. GGG GGG vs. Cotto (lineal middleweight title) Cotto vs. Alvarez (lineal middleweight title) Rigondeaux vs. Lomachenko All those would need a sweet undercard to get my money, and of course no catchweights or other such nonsense. The only ones I can think of that I would buy even if they had a poor undercard are: Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Wilder vs. Klitschko II (if Wilder was to beat Klitschko) Mayweather/Pacquiao vs. Thurman or Porter Pacquiao vs. Marquez V I would like to see a model where great cards are put on HBO and SHO for subscribers and the "PPV fights" are sold to network TV for everybody to watch. Long-term investment in the sport. That would help all involved.
