I want to see that fight, Cotto looked refreshed the other night I must say, but still have that leaky defense, needless to say I think he's got the goods to do fairly good against Sergio Martinez in a 154lbs unification bout.

    Who wants it? :smoke

    It would be a mismatch.
Martinez is too much for Cotto's plate. IMO

Cotto would lose. Too small and overmatched. It would be a big farce of an event like Mayweather - JMM was, so I'm not interested. :bart

Im surprised you all say that, considering Martinez was a damn near nobody in your eyes pre-Williams, even I thought he would beat Williams, and I think this would be a good fight.

I would lean towards Martinez, but I see an intriguing intangible, and that's Cotto's left hook to the body, Martinez is open for it if Cotto stands with him and is able to find him in the ring. Margarito stopped Martinez, so why is it totally out of the question that Cotto can be competetive with him? :think

Ugh ..Martinez would not own Cotto man ..Are we so sold on Martinez wins over Pavlik and Williams ? Wasn't Williams exposed by Quintana long before Martinez beat him ? And Pavlik was a one dimensional plodder ..Cotto vs Martinez would be a hell of a fight ! Make it happen and we wil see the best of Cotto !

Let him fight Berto/Margarito first to get a chance to build up and apply his skills under Steward before throwing him in with Floyd, Martinez, Williams, etc.

Martinez is a beast at 154..Cotto's defense still doesn't impress me. Martinez in 9 TKO.

Martinez would beat the brakes off that fool!

Some of you guys are really overreacting to a decent win for Cotto. My goodness! Martinez? The guy who just beat the **** out of a 6'3" 179lb. Pavlik with relative ease? And Cotto is supposed to resemble a challenge? Not saying size is everything, but Cotto doesn't have a single stylistic, skill, or physical advantage over the gy...

    Cotto would beat Martinez.

I have very little doubts about that pick, actually. Whilst I'm a huge fan of both guys, I just think stylistically, Cotto brings a lot of issues. The key for Martinez though, is his footspeed but his downfall would be his fighting heart. Against Williams, be was far too willing to get into a fight, just like he was against Cintron and Pavlik, bit not as much. This brings big problems against Cotto because there's a huge gap in the two on the middle and inside. Martinez wins at range, sure, but Cotto knows how to close the gap behind his fantastic jab and then it would turn into a close range fight, which Cotto would win.

I also think we'd see the return of Cotto's body punches. They'd be key because of how low Martinez holds his hands. I've never seen him against a body puncher and I think we vulnerable to them. I'd imagine the pressure would be too much and Martinez's body would start falling apart in around 8. We know that Martinez doesn't have the best stamina and often has to have quiet rounds, which almost cost him the Pavlik fight and did cost him the Williams fight, so as soon as he holds back, Cotto will rip his scythe-like hooks to the body and the fight would essentially be over.

Martinez should beat most fighters like Cotto, but the body punching is key.
