Anybody who was anybody all had Martinez picked against Pavlik , Martinez aint no Pavlik and Cotto aint no Martinez !!!! Its not the size thats the issue here , its Martinez's output and durability , the man would beat Cotto at both games , the movement in out / box scenario goes Sergio's way IMO and if Cotto was to make it a dog fight i beleive Martinez eventually would brake Cotto down with a combination of the two styles , all round Martinez is just a better fighter than Cotto @54 !!!! , i said weight wasnt the issue but you'd have to take into consideration how badly Cotto has looked in the past when fighting on the back foot against bigger men , and Martinez would certainly be putting Cotto on the back foot . That coupled with Martinez under rated power and superior hand speed i see this as a no brainer , Martinez late stoppage with overwhelming flurry's ..............
Seriously both 6'3" Williams and 6'3" Pavlik will absolutely murder Cotto. Martinez will literally put a boxing clinic on 5'7" T-Rex arms Cotto and make him look like he was stuck in mud while busting his face up. If Cotto's diehard fans want it then let's see it but I don't envision him winning against many top 154lbers.
martinez got lucky that pavlik got cut or else he would have another loss but yeah Cotto would have a tough time with him at 154. He would probably cut Cotto up as well but Martinez being slick wouldlnt matter as Cotto cuts off the ring very well, he would force him to trade. Would be a great matchup but I see Martinez winning by cuts(tko stoppage)
Martinez gets way to much credit for the win over Pavlik. Kelly's performance was so bad that even his most ardent fans think he might be shot, but he still won five rounds. Martinez simply isn't the pound for pound boxing god that people are trying to turn him in to. I'd love to see Cotto take one easy defense, and then go after Martinez and/or Williams.
NOOO. THe last person you want to see fight Cotto is Pac again. After Pac, Martinez would seem to be not as hard. None of the 154 lb'ers can string together the punch combinations that dismantled Cotto so he stands a fair chance.
I disagree completely ... I think if they fight 10 times martinez wins 8 ... cotto doesn't go to the body anymore ... the only effective body punches I saw yesterday was after yuri leg gave out ... when yuri was moving cotto wasn't throwing too many body shots none the less landing them .. I thought cotto looked a bit foolish acouple times cuz of yuri movement ... martinez moves just as much... so I don't think cotto will go to the body ... martinez also keeps his hands low so his head seems completely open ... cotto will head hunt and forget the body ... I see cotto getting frustrated throwing a low blow/body slam and then get stopped in the 10th/11th ... cotto should fight mora or spinks ... I think he beats those guys but martinez is a lil too much for him
Get a couple more fights at 154 under his belt and he'll be set for this fight. I think Cotto is definitely capable of taking it.
Haha someone in here really really won't give martinez any credit what so ever for beating kelly pavlik
Not a good look for cotto. Martinez would beat him up pretty good. I don't see cotto beating any of the other title holders at 154 & in order to get at martinez you'd probably have to beat williams.
I'm a fan of both fighters but I think Martinez probably has at least a 60/40 advantage in this fight. Though I'm a big fan of Cotto and was delighted to see him perform well last night, the feeling is more of relief that he's not "done" moreso than a feeling that he's "back". Having said that I thought he improved on some things last night, his footwork looked good, his jab was still sharp, and he didn't hunch down so much. However, this was Yuri Foreman...what do we know about Yuri Foreman? Not a whole lot other than he beat Daniel Santos on the undercard of the Pac-Cotto fight. Anyways, it was good to see him perform well but I'm still nervous heading into his future fights. The biggest concern I have for Cotto is that leaky defense. Martinez hits harder than Foreman. I'd say a lot harder. Also, Martinez fights with more activity than Foreman so if Cotto keeps letting shots get through he can get in trouble. Regarding the body punches...it's been shown time and again that fighters who move a lot negate body punches. Just a few recent examples: Froch vs. Dirrell, Abraham vs. Dirrell, Martinez vs. Pavlik, and even last night Cotto vs. Foreman. Show a lot of movement and fighters will be reluctant to throw to the body because they might be badly out of position. That would not favor Cotto in a match with Martinez. One thing that Martinez has shown he can do with great regularity, that Foreman hasn't shown, is that he can slip punches and counter with pinpoint punches. If he times Cotto's jab it can be a long night for Cotto. If Cotto can land it and put punches together behind it, he has a chance.
cotto would defeat martinez . his power is highly underrated and he would make a dent . would love to watch that fight tho if coto doesnt fight berto
Cheers, mate. I think it's an interesting fight because if you look at both fighters simply, you'll say "Cotto will struggle against slick fighters" and "Martinez will beat slow fighters". It's more complicated and multi-layered than that, yeah, but on a basic level, all signs point to a Martinez win. Probably a one-sided beatdown. However...the key here is Cotto's jab. The thing is with Pavlik, is despite having a good jab and a long reach, he didn't gave anything unpredictable after the jab. That's the big difference here and I mention Pavlik because any argument behind a Cotto win based on his jab, will be attacked because Pavlik has a better jab. However, both men use it differently. Cotto has a Liston-like jab, which he uses to dictate the range and pace of the fight. Pavlik has a more Lewis-like jab, which is used to create openings. Cotto's jab will work beter against Martinez and when he gets on the inside, that's a fight he will win. We know that Cotto is better on the inside and middle. I'm sure anyone picking Martinez will imagine he'd win the fight on the outside but can he? I don't know. I really rate Cotto's jab and I think he would dictate the entire fight behind it. Once he gets inside, then we'd see the hooks, especially to the body, which would wear Martinez down. Speed is key for Martinez though. He has to make that work for him and find a way to avoid getting bossed around by the smarter, more aggressive fighter. If he is passive and let's Cotto outwork him on the outside, it's dangerous. Maybe then, Martinez would allow the fight to become a war? That's how I see the fight turning, after about 8. I think Cotto would start strong, build up a lead and Martinez would opt to try and outfight the smaller man. Great fight though. I really like both guys and I'm sure it would be magnificant.
martinez is too much for cotto, he should concentrate on spinks, pwilliams, chavez jr, angulo, or ***** ass cintron all winnable fights but martinez is not winnable for him :hat
