It's obvious that Cotto needs a new trainer to help him get back on track. Not that a different trainer would have made a difference in the Pacquiao fight, but a new trainer would help Cotto address the flaws in his defense and point out his mistakes. I say Nacho Beristain is the best choice for Cotto. Any thoughts?
This was obvious ever since Evangelista left...Evangelista sucked but @ least was better than the clowns he has now. I personally think he should retire.
Emmanuel Steward should do the trick. I rarely suggest Manny for anyone ever since he f*cked up Jermain Taylor's game (completely), but Cotto always showed solid skills and a lot of textbook stuff (something Steward loves), an not natural talent and game based on reflexes (something Steward can't and shouldn't turn into textbook fighting). Miguel Cotto has one of the best jabs in the entire sport today, he just never based his game on that shot. It's the Lennox Lewis kind of power jab which snapped Pacquiao's head back several times. Miguel times it masterfully and accurately, just not consistent with it - at all. Steward is the best trainer to develop a consistent, varied jab, 4-5 different types for different situations, and adjusts other weapons in the arsenal to that particular shot. Cotto has it all, offense, defense, aggression, counterpunching, all the punches and ring intelligence, but never master any of these to an elite, A+ level, similarly to DLH. Under Steward, he could improve them all, fight less physically, box more, place and time punches better and set everything up with the superb jab. It'd be a very very wise decision.
I dont believe Cotto needs a new trainer. Santiago drew up a great game plan against Pacman. It wasnt until Cotto abandoned that plan that the fight turned against him. Credit to Pacman for doing this. Remember trainers put in work in the months that lead up to the fight. Not just in between rounds.
:huh How does bringing up Cotto's father and saying "you're (cotto) more intelligent than him (pacquiao)" help in any way? A real trainer would've told Cotto what he was doing wrong and told him to work behind the jab which was snapping Pac's head back...
am afraid it might be a bit too late, cause he is probably a damaged good now. I never understood how could he hire that 32 y/o unknown trainer... Looks like he is not very intelligent.
He NEEDS a change Cotto was a lot more disciplined in the ring when he was on his uncle's leash. Had he USED HIS JAB, kept his left hand up, and not leaned back as much when being charged, he would have won the fight I'm not saying Joe Santiago isn't an asset - I'm sure he is - but he needs a strong, respected character to lead his camp and view things from an outside perspective.
It's easy to say HAD he done this and that he would have won. HAD he done those things, Pacquiao would have jus found another way to win. Pacquiao is a superior fighter in almost every way. It was Pacquiaos night no matter how you look at it
Manny Steward would perfect that awesome jab Cotto already has, and make him use it more to his advantage.
Yea, it's always easy to look at things in hindsight. But it was obvious that some things were working for Cotto and other things he did were hurting him. Needless to say, Pac fought a great fight and deserve all his credit. IMO, he was open for Cotto's jab all night and was being hurt by Cotto a lot more than he showed.
Too late for Cotto. You can't teach and old dog new tricks. I mean the guy won't even clinch to break up his opponents rhythm or buy time..just stupid.
