First of all, 4 those who don't know me, I'm a huge Cotto fan, BUTTTTTTT............he definitely needs to dump the ol' guy. Steward is a really cool guy with lots of experience in boxing and I even like him 4 the most part as a commentator on HBO, but his BEST days as a good trainer are over, IMO.... yeah, some can argue about Wlad K., but besides him, what else has he done lately........ yep, nothing.... ask J Taylor, Cintron , Lee, etc, etc..
Anyways, my point comes about Cotto's performance last night... I mean, c'mon ppl, the Cotto that showed 4 paquiao's fight would've demolished Mayorga within the 1st half of the match, and that without a working corner. Cotto was not as mobile/agile as b4, not even close, even when u take in consideration he's moved up in weight. He was stiff all the time and took unnecessary risks with Mayorga, AND, AT THE SAME TIME FOLLOWED EMMANUEL INSTRUCTIONS FLAWLESSLY AT ALL TIMES (per none other than Emmanuel himself). I always said it but tried to give the guy (Steward) a chance.... it didn't work. As expected.
If Cotto goes against Margarito with Steward in his corner, he's probably in 4 a worse beating, loaded wraps or not!!!!
Maybe Cotto should watch some u-tube videos of what happened to Cintron in his rematch against Marg with Steward by his side......... BTW, yep, u probably saw/guessed it........... not too much of a difference.... no alternate plan, no nothing............. Cotto would be better off with no corner whatsoever... THERE, I SAID IT!! SO What!!!
The reality is Steward has a big name but stinks as a trainer.. At least nowadays!
    Comments/ feedback anybody??:think

His balance is better, his defense is better, his technique is better.

If you hadn't notice, that "destroyer" version of Cotto who gave us a show in the first four rounds of the Pacquiao fight also got hurt and stopped. Against a dangerous opponent, it's better this way. Trust me. Steward knows what he's doing.

to be honest, i think on these msg boards the importance of trainers are highly exagerated.

In Stewart's case, this is definitely true.
Manny is good for boxers who are already well schooled like Lennox Lewis was. For For Klitscho, it didn't matter. Because he was Stewart's next meal ticket now that Lewis was really retiring. :yep

Cotto is improving, but it is probably too late.

I agree with this comment, Cotto is a likeable boxer, a true gentleman.

All that said, I think the media perception of him is true, the damage has been done and if he can't make a remarkable defensive change, he's not gonna beat some of the very top fighters.

With Mayorga he knew he couldn't get careless. If he fights another guy and gets hit clean he will revert back to his brawling style. Steward might refine his jab a little and make him more technical, which might help him a little with Margarito, but stylewise it is a bad fight for Cotto. I give Cotto credit for guts. He is a real fighter. If something gets him in the HOF it will be his heart and willingness to fight anyone.

And Steward needs to dump Cotto. He has way too many clients and Andy Lee surely could have used him the other night. When trainers like him take on too many clients, their percentage of each one's purse should diminish with their attention and devotion. Manny and Roach are like a ***** banging three Johns at once--why pay full price?

If Cotto faces Margarito again, that could be an indication of how much Steward helps

Mayorga would have always been a tough matchup for Cotto. The version that fought Pacquiao wouldn't have done much better. A younger Mayorga would knock Cotto out. He's a bad style matchup for Cotto.

and Cotto moves his feet more under Steward. That's the only change I've noticed.

I think a point worth mentioning is that Steward's first fight with Wlad was his loss to Brewster. A few fights later he was getting dropped three times by Sam Peter. Now look at Wlad. It takes time for a new trainer to really make a difference. Unfortunately Cotto is at the tail end of his career and there isn't enough time for any major changes in his style to develop.

Margarito will never be the same, he blatantly loaded his wraps, there's a reason why he has looked like **** ever since getting caught in the dressing room against Mosley.
