Does this loss mean Cotto will split with His longtime Trainer/Uncle? With whom Miguel has had tension with. How dramatically could this effect Miguel Cotto's Career?
His trainer hardly talks to him anyway, Cotto is actually pretty much self trained believe it or not when he is in the gym. So I think a new trainer will be great for him as long as he gets a well respected trainer.
I don't think the trainer lost him the fight. But I do think that if he ever fought Margarito again he has a great mental barrier to overcome because he could do nothing to stop Margarito from overwhleming him. Getting a new trainer, some new tactics, new attitude could help because it's tough to imagine a rematch going much different.
I would be surprised if Cotto never fought again. Don't get me wrong, suffering your first loss - there's always a mental barrier to overcome, but Miguel has always seemed to have mental toughness. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to have an immdiate rematch. Ok, Cotto was beaten, but he was winning the fight up until that point. He landed more punches & was the better boxer. If the reports of how Cotto & his uncle do not get along to well any more, then I think its time for change. I know Miguel takes a good shot, but he gets hit too often. I've always felt that. No matter if your very durable or not, as some stage, something has to give when you keep taking punches. Cotto will be back & he will be champion again. Lesser fighters than him have lost & won titles afterwards. I don't see why Cotto can't? He's only 27, so the loss, although it was a bad manner in the way he lost, it could impove him as a fighter in the long run. I hope he comes back, & stronger at that. I mean, he's a fighters fighter. Always respectful of his peers. Very humble indeed!
In terms of improving or polishing a veteran fighter's skillset, a trainer's role can be grossly overrated. Its the fighter's awareness of himself and skills which are most valuable. Every fighter knows exactly what they need to improve on and watching footage of themselves is probably the most valuable thing to a fighter. When someone has been boxing since they were 10, they learn what they need to know in the first 5 years of their boxing career. After that, its just trainers saying the same old **** that they already know. I don't think any trainer will make Cotto a different fighter. Its just refreshing to work with someone else, its an atmosphere thing. Athletes tend to get better by their own drive to do so. Of course you need a trainer to work with you and help you train. The part where a trainer helps the most is in the corner between rounds. A good trainer will find a way to make you listen to them and correct any mistakes you are making in the fight.
