Its hard to get too upset with a guy who is at the end of his career and has probably the most impressive resume of guys fought out of anyone in his generation for "ducking".
If The WBC wants to strip him of his title, then that's on them. Him holding on to his title has nothing to with him being a man. The last time I checked, he is not past due on any mandatory obligations.
That's the problem with Cotto, Froch and others who are stumbing all over each other in avoiding GGG, Cotto should especially be ashamed because he holds the belt. Where is the courageous spirit of a real champion like James J Braddock, who fearlessly defended against the best of his time in Joe Louis?
Ward had promotional and injury issues as his reasons for his hiatus. I think Ward has proven time and time again he's willing to fight anyone in his division.
A long time ago, in a weight class far far away...... Cotto did some good things. But that does not mean holding a division hostage is not complete BS. Lots of legit 160 who should be able to make progress in their careers and compete for their divisional titles. Not even about GGG (or at least not just GGG), but every 160 pounder who has shed the blood sweat and tears just like Cotto did earlier in his own career to try and be the champ and make something of themselves.
Cotto was the only one that had the cojones to face Maravilla, not Mayweather, not Pacquiao. He was taking a huge gamble , he was getting his ass beat, or hopefully Maravilla was a done fighter. Cotto deserves an easy defense, tho I would have preferred for it to have been Trout. It might have cleared the air and answered some questions if Cotto really did become a better fighter and get some payback on a nemesis that had beat him on a supposed bad night. Well I'd like to see Cotto handle Trout on a good night. Then he should face Canelo or GGG.
Cotto has one belt. There is a million belts out there. Cotto not fighting for 9 months is not holding the division hostage, that's a big of an exaggeration. You talk about a long time ago, but in his very last fight he was a significant underdog. That was a fight he was fully expected to lose. I have no issue with Cotto. Sure, some fans will complain, but fans complain about everything. He signs to fight one big fight, and all is forgiven.
Didn't he have surgery + rehab? Im pretty sure he did. And wasn't he entangled in a big legal dispute with goosen promotions for about a year? I'm assuming you're trying to be sarcastic, but you can't really call out ward as if he's avoiding fighters in the same manner as Cotto's doing. You're talking about a guy who wiped the floor with the competition in the SMW tournament. For those saying Cotto has earned the right to do what he wants at this point, I don't agree with that. Other fighters who are much better than he is don't get a free pass. You think Mayweather wouldn't get chastised on this board for the next year if he said something similar to what Cotto said in that statement? It's a double standard.
GGG pretty much cleared out the Middleweight division. Cotto has no other options at that weight right now.
I think everyone is being a bit harsh here. Cotto got to Serg at the right time and is now wanting to ensure he at least defends it successfully once. Now Floyd is fighting Manny his earliest fight will be around July so there is plenty of time to get the right fight in place.
I usually like Cotto.. he has fought a lot of hard fights. I do think he took advantage of Martinez being at his weakest... but considering his resume i can give him a pass on that. Hell i will even give him a pass on taking a easy defense, but after that he needs to either fight GGG or vacate. If he had just a trinket title it would not be so bad, but hes holding the MW lineage which is something he should not keep hostage. GGG is obviously the best MW in the world and he should be given the opportunity.
