I think he did all he could in that fight, and for the most part he was winning the fight pretty comfortably. Cotto wasn't and isn't capable of doing anything else. He doesn't like staying in the pocket and probably doesn't have the physiology to do it either.
I thought he had him buzzed too, until I looked at the fight again, Clottey was blocking most of the flurries in the corner with his arms and gloves, only about 1 or 2 punches max would land in his flurries. Clottey would also flurry out of the corner and land cleaner shots on Cotto in that round, but overall Clottey was never seriously hurt and Cotto did outwork him.
a bit....point is, if you keep the pressure on Clottey he is more likely to cover and not throw back. As opposed to some guys that can counter or Margo that blocked punches with his face as he threw his own.
I agree with you, I thought that is what Cotto was going to do, but he fought so stupidly. He fought the EXACT same way he fought against Margo. He didn't fix any holes in his game, he is still highly susceptible to the upper cuts, he was getting killed with 1,2s (before the cut) and never adjusted the whole fight. I think Miguel has maxed out as a fighter, he is in decline.
Or pressure fighters are all wrong for him. He has always been suseptable to the uppercut and the 1,2
Seems to have high boxing IQ if you ask me. He made great adjustments in his fights against Judah, Mosley and Clottey after getting buzzed. His only exception of course is against Margarito.
Yeah, but he was younger and I thought he would improve, like Paul Williams did, the more he fought. Cotto has stopped improving, he has stopped trying to be better, either that or he simply can not get better.
What adjustment did he make against Judah? You mean the intentional low blows to the balls? Mosley, the running away and barely being effective fighting off the back foot? Clottey, the ****ing tackle? IN the Clottey fight he didn't change his style till the last two rounds and he lost the 11th and wasn't even effective in the 12th.
Instead of waiting on Judah like he did in the first 3 rounds, he turned aggressor and caused Judah to fold shortly thereafter. Judah was never in the fight after the 3rd round. Against Mosley, when Shane adjusted to Cotto's right hand and began having success. Cotto began boxing and got the better of Mosley. People call it 'running' but they forget to mention that Cotto landed the cleaner shots and confused Mosley in the final 4 rounds. Did the same to Clottey when Cotto stopped been a stationary target and got Clottey off his rhytm after he swept rounds 7,8 and 9.
You didn't see Clottey take that huge right hand from Cotto flush, and start to slowly lean and fall forward like a drunk on heroin??? No surprises here. Just another situation like this, of countless others..
