You're right about that. Cotto backed off of Gomez in the last round or two knowing that Gomez was overmatched and taking a pounding. So it's true that Cotto shows great sportsmanship and even mercy at times, but it is kill or be killed in the ring so vulnerabilities like that are probably better to take advantage of when the moment arises because you never know when your opponent could come back and hurt you.
i noticed as well and even in this brutal sport of boxing, those are still people in the ring and Cotto giving his hurt opponent a chance to fight toe to toe was an admiring thing to see, some call it stupid, i call it humane
