For years? No way.. he was considered nothing more than a journeyman by most. Losing to PW hurt him a lot, (also throw in that Quitana then beat PW) Rebounding with a great win against Cintron really showed him up there. And add in more people want to see him fight over Cotto helped him a lot as well.
