I don't see it and I've been a big Cotto fan. For one, to be the man at 147 he'd have to be better than Floyd or Pacquiao and he's not and at 154 he's very, very small. Really, his best chance of being the man are if Floyd and Pacquiao fight each other and both immediately retire. I don't think he's neccessarily done...but Manny Steward has a lot of work to do to get him back to where he was when he was at his best. Kirk brought up a lot of good points. I just question whether Cotto can come back from the beatings he has received, mentally and physically. Plus, he'll be carrying the scar tissue from those beatings around with him. If Manny can bring him back to when he was at his best, Cotto can be damn good again. However, being "the man" is a tall order.
I think a big portion of Cotto's decline is directly associated with the decline in his corners ability. He took a beating against Margo and then parted with his Uncle. Up until that point Cotto had steadily added to his game and was evolving as a fighter. The Cotto that fought during the first 6 rounds of the Margo fight was the best Cotto I’ve ever seen. After that though he stopped improving in his ability through lesser training and started to face tougher opposition. I didn't think he looked too bad in the Clottey fight. It was just a tough grueling fight that he fought with a handicap. A fight most fighters coming off a recent loss to Margo wouldn't take. Then he stepped in with Pac who many consider to be the best in the world and had not improved, likely declined in his ability, had no help in training and it showed. He had a terrible game plan thinking he was going to out muscle Pac and paid the price. I don't think Cotto is as washed up or as lost as many of you suggest. I think a lot depends on how his relationship with Steward goes and how he progresses. I honestly feel had his Uncle been in his corner the entire time he would have won the first four rounds against Clottey, which included a KD, stopped the fight and walked away looking every bit the Cotto we expected him to be. Then went on to fight a much more competitive fight with Pac and none of this would be a real discussion. Unfortunately that isn't how it played out and now he does have a hill to climb. I'm hoping Cotto returns to form and the 147lb division and can make it back to the top, but the odds are indeed against him.
Cotto don't have the strenght to bounce back from the margarito beatdown. He was broken in that fight, and to make it even more difficult he was thrown in with Pacquiao in his just 2nd fight after Margo... we all saw what happened in that fight as well. It takes a special psyche to come back from such a bad beating, and to be honest I don't recall anyone who took such a brutal beating and came back to be the man.
Cotto's best days are gone. Cotto was, and will never be the man of any division he fights in. I called that one 5 years ago.
Please, I can't even imagine the one sided beating Floyd Mayweather would lay down on Cotto, would be embarassing
My dream is that I wake up tomorrow morning with Megan fox sitting on my face, and Paula Patton going down on me..... You wanna know the difference? Mine is actually realistically possible in this lifetime
Keep dreaming dude. That situation is more likely to happen in your dream(the same with Cotto beating Pacquiao and Mayweather). I hope your dream and LukeO's dream comes true, Im a big Cotto fan.
Cotto does not have the heart he needs.....therefore and ergo he can never be "the man". That is just part of his make-up.
He received two beatings but looked good early on in both fights(of course he looked good really just in round 1 of the Pacquiao fight). I hope he beats Foreman and retires and spends time with his beautiful wife and children.
