Is there a limit to his greatness? If he wins will it be expected that the eventually moves up again? Is the potential Pav-PTP winner on deck? How bout the Haye-Valuev victor? The point I'm trying to make is it seems like his critics expect him to continue to take on unprecedented challenges and that he's suppose to oblige the unforeseen. It's amazing that he gotten this far and has had the success that he's enjoyed that we the fans should be satisfied with whatever weight increases that he willing to try at this point.

People expect too much from Pac. Just because he's had success moving up doesn't mean that he's a man without limits.

Of course there's a limit, isn't pac even thinking about quiting soon? Don't get me wrong I'm personally not trying to put pressure on pac (not that I alone have the power too but you get it) to keep moving up in weight or anyting that we know he can't do or that he could get seriously hurt. But in this case in particular I see nothing wrong with putting the title on the line only if the fight is at 147. He already took the risk with ODLH, later on fought the also bigger expirienced 140 champion in Hatton and Cotto is stylistically very available for Pac to beat, the question is, will he be able to do it against the naturally bigger champion. He really won't be put down hard if he loses because after all, he is the significantly smaller man and the one going for the bigger greatness, I'm just saying comparing something we know Cotto can't do with something we know Pac can is unfair.

Pac's fight against Hatton is disqualified from the pertinent part of this discussion because it took place at 140. Anybody who watched the fight against Oscar could see that Pac wasn't fighting against a prime Golden Boy and so that fight imo doesn't qualify Pac as an automatic capable entry into the division. The truth is that only time will tell how Pac is able to take the bigger man's punches and how his own body and strength settles into the higher weight. And btw Cotto is a multi divisional champion himself so there is a precedence to compare how he would fare if he moved up again.

I see nothing wrong with putting the 147lb title on the line if the bout took place at a catch weight of 137lbs; for the record. If both fighters are under the weight limit of the division then imo it shouldn't matter what there weigh in weight is just as long as it meets the terms of the agreed upon catchweight. If Wlad fought Calderon at 160 and somehow made weight then it should be for the heavyweight championship of the world imho.

Well, I already explained why Cotto moved up in weight... ODLH may have looked over the hill, but around that time Roach was the only that "knew" because even he had his doubts during the fights build up. But even if Oscar looked past it, you still have to consider how well Pac perfomed in that fight and that although definitely not often, he did get tagged. Same thing goes for Hatton, you say he does not count in the discussion because he's not a welter weight, but my point is that Pac is a strong jrwelterweight in his own right and would most likely dominate the division if he decided to stay. Cotto is no "drained" or shot Oscar, but Manny did look flawless in that fight, so he's no victim in this situation like you seem to be implying.

Cmon, Beenie. You can't challenge a welterweight champ for his title, but force him to come at 145. It's a welterweight title, so the champ should be allowed to come in the fight at 147.

Pac's win over Hatton was indeed impressive and notable to the overall discussion but not pertinent to how Pac fares against 147 lb fighters. IMO is Pac elected to fight Cotto at 147 then he would indeed be a victim in every possible way.

I'll keep using the Leonard vs Lelande comparison. Leonard won the 175 lb title from Lelonde in a super middle weight fight at 168.

I dont know I just don't see it that way, but than again I do think Pac will probably win so maybe I just have a different perception of the whole victim situation. All your points seem fair so I guess will just wait and see :good

    Well, that was Lalonde's fault.

If I was a champ at 147 I wouldn't allow any challenger to force me to put my title on the line at a 145-pound limit.

I've somewhat addressed this in an earlier post. Cotto's "championship" is meaningless considering how he achieved it. The value in it is how it can be used in promoting. With the title on the line it makes the perception of this fight even more of a spectacle and thus perhaps generating more interest and PPV buys which can only be deemed as a positive thing for Cotto. If the title isn't on the line and Cotto were the lose the Pac the the belt becomes even more worthless than it already is.
