Watching the interview of Cotto back in Puerto Rico, where his fans all gave him his due props for his valiant efforts. Cotto was asked why he didn't deliver the body shots he so well known for. Cotto stated that they (I'm assuming him and evangelista) just didn't know how to go about it. " ... no pudimos encontrar la manera..." ( we couldn't find the manner) What are your take on this? What did Margo do that made it difficult for Cotto? Cotto was able to deliver serious headshots, but would he leave himself too open going for a bodyshot making it too risky? Or was it something else?
It just seemed as simple as horrible game planning. Cotto learned he could box against Mosley and went away from his bread and butter. Also, I would translate that maybe as "We just couldnt find the way to the body"..
Cotto sets up his bodywork by attacking the head first. This brings the guard up and forces the other guy back. At that point when Cotto sees that his power has made a dent he will then go on the hunt, stepping into his punches and throwing downstairs as he keeps them occupied upstairs. It worked perfectly against some opponents but against Mosley and Margarito (two hard heads) it didn't work so well. So he was forced to go to plan B which was to just wait for Margarito to fall in, throw the counters and get out. But when Margarito started to beat him by getting off first, waiting on Margarito was no longer cutting it. And that is about when it was over.
I really dont know. Margarito has a concrete head thats for sure but we already new that. Cotto probably wanted to avoid going to the body to avoid a war. Its easier to flick the jab and through fast combinations to the head and get out of there as cotto proved. If he went to the body he would have to plant his feet and would have been inside, which is where margo wanted him. Im still shocked that margaito was able to take the punishemnt he did and not cut or slow down. If cotto cant hurt him, he cant beat him.
If it have hit to the body...He was taking a serious risk of having his chin CRACKED! Cotto took some great shots in that fight (he proved his chin), but in the past his chin didn't seem as strong. I wish we could have seen at least a few Cotto body shots though. I would be interested to see if Margo could take them. We all know his chin is made of steel....Wonder how well that body takes punishment?
I think the outcome could have been different if Cotto invested more on body punching. Margo's chin is simply made of steel.
Margarito was giving headshots for free all night long, it was just easier for cotto to take them than go to the body
That's a fallacy. If a guy gives you his chin all night you are going to at least try and tap his midsection just to see whats up. Cotto isn't stupid.
It was too difficult (for Cotto) to even go to the body when he had free headshots, it allowed him to (Margo) to cover downstairs more often. I think it distracted Cotto all night long, I mean he was easily ahead on the cards and didnt have to do much but murder Margo with combos to the head all night long. I dont think it was a matter of being smart, it was just poor judgement on Cottos part to think he could last the rest of the night without succumbing to those body shots and attacking margo to the head. Plus I think he sort of abandoned his body attack in his prevous fight with sugar shane , and didnt commit to it at all.
It would make sense if Margarito hadn't been dropped before by a bodyshot. I mean, I agree that Margarito defended his body well and that he didn't give Cotto room. In my eyes that says everything. I don't think it was some conscious decision not to bother with the body from Cotto. He just didn't have alot of opportunities there.
So let me ask you guys ( good replys by the way) If you were in Cottos corner what would you tell him to do to get to the body? Cuz Cotto said they couldn't find the manner, So was there nothing he could of done?
I don't think there was any way to land solid bodyshots on a consistent basis because Margo kept his right elbow tucked in and was ready to counter with the left uppercut if Cotto dived in head-first to land a shot. Cotto was at a 6" reach disadvantage and would need to set his feet to land the left to the body which would open up his head for counters before he could step back out. Cotto's team knew that if Cotto was hurt early it would be a very long night hence the great boxing we witnessed in the earlier rounds. Cotto did try in the 2nd round to brawl a little with Margo to test himself I think and was stunned a bit from Margo's power and abandoned that plan right way. I think that once Margo felt him out in R1 and tasted his power he knew that nothing would hurt him so he didn't even bother to keep his guard up all the time. If you noticed in the 1st and 2nd Cintron fight, Margo had the highest guard I have seen him use because he respected Cintron's power. It didn't stop him from walking Kermit down but he kept it up during the entire fight and his trainer kept telling him between rounds to keep his hands up which is rare in a Margo fight.
Hm... Man I really don't know. The only other thing he could have done was to make it physical in the sense he could just drop his head and bulldoze into Tony. Make his head a factor. Maybe in forcing Tony upright he will make him block the head with his gloves. That would allow him to tee off on Tony's body. Of course it wouldn't be long before the ref complains but it might get him a small window of opportunity to get work done there. Or it could go all night like a Holyfield fight.:rofl
Going to the body wouldve meant Cotto sitting on some his punches which obviously wasnt his gameplan Saturday.
