Rewatched the fight last night: What was the story with Mosley? He looked like a completely different fighter than the guy who fought Margarito or even Mayorga. He looked lethargic and his mouth was open by round 5. Credit to Cotto for fighting an excellent fight, but what struck me was how un-Mosley Shane looked, like he was ill, or simply very old. Did he take the fight too lightly and come in unprepared and out of shape? Any opinions, thoughts, insight?
Mosley said he was completely surprised with a)how slick Cotto was and b)how good of a boxer he was. He said they expected much different and by the time he figured Cotto out, it was too late. Their rematch should be tremendously intriguing.
Mosley wasted his energy early by throwing every punch with mean intentions. He wanted to knock cotto out and that was his mistake.
He wasn't prepared for Cotto. Not to say he wasn't prepared for a fight, just not the fight Cotto fought or the fighter Cotto was that night. He had the wrong game-plan and underestimated certain aspects of Cotto's skill-set. He also wasn't getting very good advice in his corner. If he stays the same fighter that beat Margo (doesn't get any older, so to speak) I think he'll win a rematch, but it's hard to tell what someone will look like from fight to fight once they get up to Mosley's age.
Styles make fights. Cotto is great in the center of the ring. Shane needs to be a more aggressive fighter in the rematch. That will be the difference.
Yep, you can see in the late rounds the moment Shane realizes what the situation is, starts bouncing and the rest of the fight is his.
I think what threw Shane off the most was Cotto's jab. I never remember it looking so good anytime before that fight. Still, Mosley did come on late, and I think he took enough rounds to seal it, although I realize I am with the minority opinion on this view. If they fight again, I think Shane takes it decisively.
that's what happens when top boxers fight in mismatches, it say's more about cotto/arum than jennings.
