Cotto to me is the perfedct example of a prospect being brought up correctly. After about 10 fights I recognise all his opponents. He fought a number of styles and dealt with them- slick skills in Malignaggi, power in Torres and Bailey and awkwardness in Maussa. I mean ever Bailey has gone on to significant success- he was brought along as a pro correctly.
Top Rank are pros at that, GBP needs to learn from TR on how to bring up a prospect so they don't end up with unnecessary losses like the ones Victor Ortiz and Danny Jacobs have.
Definatly. I won money on Maidana winning- I thought a win over a Mike Aroutis to a puncher (no matter how limited) was a bit daft to say the least.
The problem with that is that it could cause for unexposed protected hypejobs instead of just good matched. Mismatching guys is never smart of course but maidana just beat ortiz when he showed his glass heart, jacobs got knocked the **** out by a superior boxer. I dont see why they should have kept feeding him bums without ever testing himself, like chavez jr with toprank at the moment. Jacobs carreer isnt over neither is ortiz or khans, people care to much about a loss nowadays I believe they can come back stronger and still be good fighters. Thats always better then ending up like hamed and lose your soul when you eventually lose one fight.
there aren't just bums and elite level fighters, there's a class in between, such as malignaggi, baldomir, cotto's bro etc you build up a prospect by matching him with tomato cans then bums then journeymen then b level THEN world class, now keep in mind different fighters have different weaknesses so you gotta eliminate those weakness by matching them up with lesser fighters who are able to expose some of those weaknesses but not necessarily beat them so they know what to do and practice at covering their weaknesses.
