cotto wins at 147. jcc was never a huge threat at that weight. unless cotto beats him easy and gets robbed aka a draw ala sweet pea

i love cotto, but he loses this...he doesn't have the toughness to get thru chavez's body and facial attack......

and of course chavez didnt look good above 140, look who he fought for ****s sake.......pernell

i think everyone else he fought above 140 he beat...sure not no atg's, but styles make fights and this is one style that i dont think cotto can hang with

Even if Cotto managed to win this, he wont win it easy...He'll go through so much hell...Chavez is all wrong for Cotto, Julio was passed his best when he first fought at 147, and wasnt as disciplined as he once was.

that's another note these guys aint taking into consideration.....chavez at 147 would've been a different story if he had gone up a bit sooner....

Maybe, but im not so sure to be honest. Chavez was pretty small for that weight i feel, so i dont think he would be anything like he was in his previous weight classes. But he would still be able to handle someone like Cotto IMO.

    Chavez 5 foot 7 1/2
    Cotto 5 foot 7

Of course Cotto weighed in at close to MW even when he was a JWW...

Again, I think people may be judging Chavez a little too harshly because of his lack of success at WW. Remember, he was facing Pernell Whitaker, not some average champ. The 1993 Whitaker probably wins an 8-4, 9-3 type decision against Cotto, just like he did (on many cards) against Chavez then.

The second title fight Chavez had at 147, he was facing Oscar De La Hoya, another superior fighter to Cotto, and Chavez was 36 years old. Chavez also fought pretty well that night, all things considered.

I might actually favor the Chavez of the early 90s here to be able to make the move up and beat the physically larger Cotto. I think it's a tough matchup to pick actually. Chavez had better skills and ability than Cotto.

Excellent point. I remember seeing Chavez rocking Oscar with a hard right in their second fight, and Oscar is a iron chinned mofo. Can you imagine how Cotto would react to a shot like that?

Yes i agree even though Chavez was clearly past it, he did show flashes of his old self in the 2nd fight with a prime ODLH... Even that version of Chavez would give Cotto all he wanted... So imagine if Chavez had decided to move up to Welter 4 or 5 yers before that. The 143 lb version that fought Whittaker would have beaten Cotto .

doesnt matter when he went up in weight. all we have to go on at this stage is how he looked at 147. based on that i think cotto beats him. cotto is no whitaker and sweet pea won that fight rather convincingly. but alas we will never know for sure

Cotto really doesnt do anything that would trouble him, he certainly wouldnt beat him going toe to toe, and hes not slick enough to outbox him.. I think Chavez is being underrated on this thread once again:-(
